While this most certainly raises my opinion of the prof a few inches out of the gutter in my mind that it has inhabited over the last few days, I can't help feeling many people here are rather eager to call it quits and put and end to this row even if it means overlooking some very serious still unanswered questions.

First I am not going to forgive anyone until I see a letter in the Times retracting the comments Richard made to Ruth Gledhill there and apologising for the misleading impression he gave to its (hundreds of thousands of) readers about us. That was a really shocking error of judgement on his part and one that I am absolutely not going to lay aside. It is no good saying he hadn't had time to catch up on everything that had happened. You don't know what's going on, you don't talk to journos about it. Simple.

Second, while it is to his credit that he wants to take full responsibility, it is no good unless he fully grasps what he is taking responsility for. I witnessed acts that I simply cannot explain without attributing malice to whoever did them, including the suppression of PMs, sigs and certain avatars advertising other forums followed by a dishonest claim that there was no intention to stop people congregating on other forums. I am not prepared to accept RD's responsibility for these acts if it means they must be treated as "mistakes".

I would also like to say, not as a complaint but simply as a comment, that as someone who enjoyed answering people's questions on science and who knew as much about pure maths as anyone on that forum I have no interest in contributing my knowledge in a setting that offers no sense of community and wants me to seek approval from someone who I'm sure knows very little on the subjects I talk about. Those of us wth expertise will share it where we most enjoy doing so, and that will be somewhere that is both fun and free.

Wow. No defence of the preposterous strawman that atheists say religion is responsible for all cruelty, no defence of the ludicrous suggestion that religious violence is not caused by religion, no defence of the totally unsupported claim that religion will be around forever. In fact no defence of anything Harris criticises. I would not do Armstrong the dignity of calling her pathetic attempt at saving face a "response", when it does not actually address any of the points made in the piece it is supposedly a response to.

Go to: Holy See declares unique copyright on Papal figure

What, they can just "declare" that they own the rights to something and we are all magically obliged to take them seriously?

Well two can play at that game. For I hereby proclaim that it is I who owns that Pope.

Someone tell the Church to stop using my Pope without permission.

Child-buggery is the result of the infallible Second Vatican Council. Interesting.

I don't disagree with anything Pat said there, but didn't there used to be jokes in these monologues?
