Go to: Evolution skeptics will soon be silenced by science: Richard Leakey

Sometime in the next 15 to 30 years, scientific discoveries will have accelerated to the point that "even the skeptics can accept it," the Kenyan-born paleoanthropologist said.

"If you get to the stage where you can persuade people on the evidence, that it's solid, that we are all African, that color is superficial, that stages of development of culture are all interactive, then I think we have a chance of a world that will respond better to global challenges."

150 years since The Origins of Species, tons of new discoveries : why 15-30 years more would change anything ?

Go to: The Case for Naturalism

Why would the goal of the atheist movement be anything but atheism? And what makes you think the atheist movement is really about equality, as you said in that other thread? I've been following it closely for several years now, and haven't seen anything to suggest that's the case.

Well, because the first goal that the atheist movement should achieve is the end of the privileges of the religious. It's certainly not its long-term goal, but once we have this, I think that will be enough for many members of the atheist movement.

Go to: Why do French intellectuals "know nothing about science"?

Xor's Avatar Jump to comment 30 by Xor

if you've ever studied their pretty language it is easy to understand why.

Obviously the French are not stupid but they are linguistically locked into seeing everything through emotional/Human tinted glasses. How can you ever truly understand anything if you are forever trapped into seeing the universe as a meal, a girlfriend or your mother.

I don't get it.

Go to: Why do French intellectuals "know nothing about science"?

I'm French. There is a powerful lobby for Freud indeed. I don't think it's about science; it's about the media coverage on psychoanalysis which is non-existent, allowing psychonalists to maintain a monopoly on several subjects. We don't have a lot of creationists, climate-change deniers, nobody thinks that vaccines are dangerous, and religion has little power. On the other hand, researchers are largely underpaid and flee to other countries; their communication to the public is almost non-existant and the population is in most cases frightened by science. Our education system (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Classe_pr%C3%A9paratoire_aux_grandes_%C3%A9coles) doesn't promote scientific research and our budget in research is ludicrous.

Go to: Interview: Richard Dawkins Celebrates Reason, Ridicules Faith

Xor's Avatar Jump to comment 41 by Xor

The question is why do you listen to that person. Do you have rational, evidence based reasons for listening to that person or is it just that you have been raised to respect the opinions of people wearing that particular kind of funny hat ?

Michael

This. If we define faith as beleving something without evidence, then you're not having faith when you trust X : if you have evidence that X has evidence about what he's talking, so it's okay. One could say that it's the same thing with the religious - that he has evidence that his father has evidence that his father has evidence that... that the apostle has evidence that Jesus was actually reborn. But that would be false, because it is almost impossible that the father of the father of the father... asked evidence from the apostle. If it was the case, the religious would surely have one piece of evidence.

But about the age of the universe, every phisicist who tested it agree on the age. It's evidence that they have evidence (if we exclude a massive, improbable plot).
