The person Richard mentioned in the hate mail section was Ann Coulter, who is, unfortunately, famous. Ann is a right wing commentator who used to be on Fox News. Other things she has said include: "My libertarian friends are probably getting a little upset now but I think that's because they never appreciate the benefits of local fascism" . . . and . . . "The portrayal of Senator Joe McCarthy as a wild-eyed demagogue destroying innocent lives is sheer liberal hobgoblinism." . . . and . . . [on the people who cheered 9-11], "We know who the homicidal maniacs are. They are the ones cheering and dancing right now. We should invade their countries, kill their leaders and convert them to Christianity." (All taken from WikiQuotes).

So Richard isn't alone in receiving such bile from her. I think her hate is directed at pretty much anyone who isn't an American ultra-conservative religious fundamentalist. And I think Ann is more than capable of responding, so no bad form there.

Doing U-turns is often how science progresses. The accepted theory is overturned -- sometimes radically -- by newer, better evidence. We should be proud of our truth-seeking U-turns!

Go to: Christopher Hitchens: In Confidence

Christopher doesn't feel he has contributed to humanity through his writing. I beg to differ. His wonderful "God is Not Great" alone is an enormous contribution to clear thinking and reason and, I think, to humanity at large. It has given me (and, I'm sure, countless others like me) the confidence to stand up for reason and science in the face of religious fundamentalism. What more useful gift could he have given? Good luck with all the treatment Christopher! I hope with all my heart that the experimental procedures that could cure you draw so tantalizingly near that you can grasp them and they heal you and give the world another 30 or 40 years of your writing and debating.
