Go to: Cardinal Brady will not resign over 'abuse failure'

Cardinal Brady said he accepted he was part of "an unhelpful culture of deference and silence in society, and the Church".

"Unhelpful" - what a huge understatement.

" society, and the Church" - seems to be an attempt to diffuse the blame onto society as a whole, when the evidence appears to point to a cover-up that was directed specifically at protecting the reputation of the Church.

Even if Cardinal Brady were to be cleared of all blame, I still cannot believe the heartless indifference shown by him and other senior members of the Catholic Church.

Go to: Study: US College Students Advance Little Intellectually

She told me they spend all evening, every evening except Friday and Saturday nights, glued to facebook. They run in the door, go to their rooms, put their flip-flops on, come running back into the living room, flip open their lap tops and get on facebook.

This is the new college student.

Unfortunately, this reminds me of many of the students at my university.

Part of the problem seems to be that many students see university as just 'something that you do after school, but before you get a job'. They appear to have chosen their area of study based on nothing more than a vague interest, and choose their classes based on which of them require the least amount of work.

Real interest and real passion for a subject is limited, with students deciding ahead of time what degree classification they need - or think they can achieve - and then doing the minimum amount of work required to attain that grade.

Far more time is spent drinking, partying, or making costumes for the next themed party in the student bar.

I know this makes me sound like a stick-in-the-mud. But I don’t begrudge people having a good time at university - it just seems that the balance between work and play has tipped too far in the direction of ‘play’.

Go to: South African church billboard banned following atheist complaint

I have to say that I’m not very keen on the use of the “it’s offensive to me/us” argument to get things like this taken down.

We rightly mock the religious when they try to do the same thing.

One of the things I find very encouraging when considering the possibility/probability of life elsewhere in the universe, is the timing of the origin of life on this planet.

The Earth is around 4.5 billion years old, and the earliest evidence for life is dated to around 3.5 billion years ago.

When you consider that the processes that eventually led to life (self-replicating molecules etc.) probably started a good while before life as we know it appeared, and that for the earliest part of the Earth’s existence life just couldn’t exist due to the physical state of the planet. It seems like life originated relatively quickly after the conditions for it to exist arose.

It’s almost like life just couldn’t wait to get started!
