Go to: A lawsuit too far?

On the basis of a parent's complaint about religious bias in music lessons in the school, the Freedom From Religion Foundation has written to the school board pointing out that there already is a legal judgement against prayers set to music.

The FFRF sent a third letter on August 6. Markert pointed out in that letter that the Second Circuit Court of Appeals, which has jurisdiction over New York, had specifically dealt with “Thank You For the World So Sweet” in a school prayer case, ruling that it was a prayer and that school officials were correct to ban teachers from leading their students in reciting it.

It's all very legalistic but that's the way these battles over the Constitution go. Behind the jargon, there most likely is an attempt to smuggle prayer into school and the opposition to it is part of the perpetual struggle against religious indoctrination of children in public (state) schools.

Comment 43 by Byrneo This is a very bad lawsuit.

A parent directly involved thinks there is cause for complaint. It's all about the actual situation at the school, not about you and generalities based on your experience.

Comment 23 by TheRationalizer Why do you think that Christian religious worship is mandatory in the UK for school children aged up to 11 but then after that it is not?

That's incorrect. Schools in the state system in England and Wales have a legal obligation to hold religious services and provide religious instruction. It doesn't stop after primary (elementary) school.
