Good lord. It's not as if Sam's saying anything at all controversial. It's exactly what moral philosophers have been saying for centuries. Millenia, even. Given our set of goals (be it maximization of Utility/Pleasure in the vein of J. S. Mill, adherence to a Categorical Imperative in the vein of Kant, or whatever else) we can determine objectively which actions serve those goals and which do not by observing the world around us.


That's all he's saying.

I just don't know why it's taking him so many words to say it.

It seems that Harris has a certain unspoken assumption of a moral philosophy approximating Utilitarianism. In that light, science most definitely can inform our morals.

It's just that you need an underlying metaphysics of morality before you can make use of just about any sort of information.
