Go to: How does one explain psychological denial?

I think it's to do with social reasons. Humans devote so much of their lives to trying to appear as though they are on a higher social perch and sucking up to other humans who are on a higher social perch. This is very irratioanl behavior. But war is never directly self-destructive. So I wouldn't put war in the same category as smoking.

Go to: Death penalty or no death penalty?

Devon Quixote's Avatar Jump to comment 70 by Devon Quixote

What's the primary function of the justice system? To prevent crime, right? But it's not possible to prevent crime; all society can do is deter it. We can make laws that are designed to minimize crime in society. Regarding the death penalty; does the death penalty reduce crime? I don't think it does. I can actually see how the death penalty would be the cause of crime. If a fugitive criminal thinks he or she is going to get the death penalty, they're not going to give up without a fight.

To me, the death penalty is a corruption of the justice system. The corrupting influence is the desire for revenge. If the justice system is based on revenge, then it has failed society.

Go to: Why sexual reproduction is so popular...

Have you seen how the herds of African herbivores do it? It's just a few brief seconds of copulation. Sure, they're probably a very pleasant few briefs seconds, but fighting off the challenges from rivals and performing mating rituals take far longer than the act itself! From this, I'd have to conclude that the pleasure from the act of sex is not what motivates the desire for sex. And this opens up a whole new line of thought; what are common sexual motivations? Is the pursuit of pleasure the most common sexual motivation?

Go to: Germany: Politicians plan boycott of pope’s Bundestag speech

Religion is to a politician what a cattle prod is to a cattle farmer. But it also works in the opposite. If a politician notices growing anti-religion within the populace, they will prod the cattle with a different device. I suspect this is such a device.

Go to: For no Atheists may be made a Freemason

Why would you even want to be part of an organization that confirms membership based on what imaginary beings you do or do not believe? You know what that is? It's a cult. Cults will ostracize you if you don't believe what the cult leaders tell you to believe. Cults will then make you a pariah in your own community. And cults brainwash their members into thinking everything they do and everything related to the cult is good and right. Sounds like you've swallowed the Freemason brainwashing hook, line and sinker.

There is only one cult people need to belong to in order to be moral; it's called the cult of humanity. Give it a try sometime.
