Irshad Manji notes that in Egypt, early in the last century, girls ceremonially burnt their veils as a sign of liberation. Why? Because, pouring out of the West was the fire of the Enlightenment, of the idea of human liberation.

Fanusi, can you give me the source of that statement by Irshad Manji ? And some other sources of that event, if possible. I am interested in what was going on in Egypt (and other Islamic countries) at that time.

And I agree with you about multiculturalism. I personally find all those fancy postmodernists and relativists even more disgusting than the terrorists - at least the latter believe that absolutes exists and that one way of living is better than another (I disagree with them about everything else, thought).

"it could incide acts of violence by a small radical segment"

If it's just a "small radical segment", then why are they worried? No one is worried about neo nazis complaining about portrayal of Hitler

Think about that. Just four years after Perl Harbor two mushroom clouds emerged over Japan and fascism was history. Roman salute is still, to this day illegal in Germany. It's been seven years since 9/11 and what do we have? Cartoon riots, murder of Theo Van Gogh and now this . We aren't even correctly identifying the problem.

Don't get me wrong, I don't think that wast Islamic revolution is possible, but things are likely to get very very nasty if we continue pretending that problem doesn't exist.

say what you want, but the fact is that this discussion is about gay people being allowed to DANCE.

In some parts of the world they are not even allowed to LIVE.

If we want to be taken seriously, we need to get our priorities straight.

If it is "rational" thing,--albeit in an unconscious level,--how does it fit in with Dawkins' theory of "selfish genes misfiring"?

I never said that Dawkins was right.

So that enhance the chance of survival of the group v.s other groups where members don't cooperate. Maybe I am naive like beelzebub, but that sounds like group selection to me.

Not exactly, because your goal is still your own survival and no one else's (at least at genetic and unconscious level), you only drag others because you have to. In prisoner's dilemma, each prisoner is trying to get his own arse out of trouble, not caring about the other one, but they still end up cooperating.
