Go to: Losing Faith: an Interview with Peter Boghossian and Matt Thornton

Very cool. I came to atheism in part due to my experiences in martial arts. Moving from traditional martial arts and believing in ki etc. and moving to MMA with the emphasis on feedback from reality. Matt Thornton was one of the influences on that path.

Islam is not bullshit because it's alien, it's bullshit because it's bullshit.

Dude! Thats exactly my point.

This site is the Richard Dawkins Foundation for Reason and Science. There is nothing in the least unreasoning, in describing a violent, misogynistic and intolerant political cult, like for instance, islam, as being alien. At least not as it relates to a liberal, secular democracy, such as ours.

An idea is neither more nor less bullshit for being alien. So why mention it? Thats why its unreasoning. It is a bigotted view, in my opinion, implying some special status for British people that doesn't apply to the rest of us.

The truth or falsehood of these idea matters little whether the occur in a liberal secular democracy or anywhere else.

Comment 98 by Atheist Mike :

It being 'alien' is an important thing to point out because, since we essentially try to integrate every cultures in our free society, those who refuse to do so are basically sticking to ideals of foreign states. There's nothing wrong in calling it what it is, those who oppose that probably wouldn't be so keen to denounce Palestinians if they were to protest against Israeli schools teaching things deemed inappropriate by them in their future state. They'd actually probably enjoy the use of terms like neo-colonialism and support them thoroughly.

Ideals of foreign states? What if those ideals are better than yours? Atheists should be essentially rational thinkers, evaluating everything for themselves based on reason and evidence. Nobody should be clinging to anything like "our ideals" or "their ideals". We should be thinking people not sheep.

I would argue that nationalism is as irrational as religion and shares many of the same purposes. Like creating an "us" against "them".

I'm afraid Richard has fallen into that trap, which is such a shame given all the good work he does to promote human dignity.
