Abortion kills babies and harms women.

I negate your use of the word babies; it implies that you know nothing or next to it concerning embryology or the time constraints on abortion, and/or are pathetically using emotive language to invoke a sympathetic response. Could go into it here, or alternately, you could educate yourself.

If only abortion prevented something that killed statistically more (actual) babies, and harmed and killed more women. Oh yes, that would be childbirth. Not to mention the various associates of childbirth such as ectopic pregnancy.

[...]claims that aggressive secularism is taking over the UK.

Horror of horrors! We've seen the bombings, the mutilations, the wars caused by aggressive religion. One can only imagine what 'agressive secularism' could cause. Such atrocities pale in comparison to no prayers before council meetings.

As for whether the story regarding rape threats is true or not, I agree that it should not be 'taken as gospel' (if you'll excuse me) without evidence.

However, "I find it difficult, if not impossible to believe that the police reacted in such a way" is not a sentiment that I can share. I find it disturbingly easy to believe. It must be remembered that people within the police force are perfectly as fallible as people without it, and there are plenty of documented occasions in which police have behaved appallingly. Prof. Dawkins is absolutely correct; we need to collect instances of this occurring, if indeed it is.

Y'know he's a religious wally, but he's rather a nice , gentle, scholarly religious wally, who would clearly like to be nicer (to women and gay people, for instance) that his horrid co-religionists will let him be...

I quite agree. I have no respect for his religious ideology, but it is still perfectly possible to respect the man himself, as somebody with whom, yes, I disagree on many levels but is still an intelligent and certainly not intentionally malicious person.

That's not to say he should have an easy go of it at all... But I fear that too many people are looking at this conversation as something which Dawkins must 'win' because 'winning' is all that is important. BS. Both theists and atheists lose debates, what's important is the content of claims made and that both parties maintain open-mindedness. It's also somewhat worrying to see people here grouping all theists together as being exactly the same kind of malevolent humans that some theists are misguided enough to percieve all atheists as being.
