Several of us have pointed out that Richard Dawkins was not referring to a child but to a university student and by way of substantiation, I provided an excerpt of his post which I thought was unambiguous. Nevertheless, you continue to insist he was referring to the schoolgirl. Could you please quote the portion of Dawkins' post that you unequivocally interpret as an insensitive reference to the child?

Comment 78 by InYourFaceNewYorker :

I agree that the school did not do anything wrong. My point was, for the umpteenth time, that I thought Richard was insensitive to make such a comment about a kid!

The article says it is evident that Richard Dawkins has an "animus against Catholicism". That seems a bit harsh; vexation, impatience, indignation perhaps but animus?

S.I. Hayakawa’s in the book, Use the Right Word, says of the word, animus:

Animus implies a feeling of ill will or antipathy so deep-rooted and intertwined with character and background that a coherent explanation of its cause is seldom possible.

Comment 71 by InYourFaceNewYorker :

I am extremely frustrated that people keep missing my point. This is not about the fact that the 8th grader (13-14 years old) cried but the fact that Richard referred to her as a pathetic little idiot. What part of that is difficult to understand? ...

I read the above before without having first read Richard Dawkins post #25. I then went back, found post #25 and read it. My understanding of the text leads me to believe that you are quite mistaken. The student deemed a weedy little fool was a university attendee and not the eight grader mentioned in the article.

Comment 25 by Richard Dawkins :

I too caused a girl to cry, for the same reason, when I made a cameo appearance in a classroom at a small university in America earlier this year. ...

History classes routinely cover events involving atrocities that surely go against everything students believe, undoubtedly without histrionic outbursts. That the 8th grade student reacted to a science presentation by bursting into tears causes me to wonder about the indoctrination methods to which she may have been subjected in Sunday school or at home.

Go to: Evolution-denying Commencement speaker stirs controversy at Emory University

I have trouble reconciling an "accomplished neurosurgeon" with such remarks as, "ultimately, if you accept the evolutionary theory, you dismiss ethics, you don't have to abide by a set of moral codes" or assertions "that there is no evidence for evolution, that there are no transitional fossils that provide evidence for the evolution of humans from a common ancestor with others apes, that evolution is a wholly random process, and that life is too complex to have originated by the natural process of evolution". How can a consummate neurosurgeon be so unknowledgeable about basic science or so deeply in denial?

Were I to find myself in the unfortunate position of requiring the services of a neurosurgeon, despite his reputation in that field, Dr. Ben Carson would not be on my list of possible choices. I could not trust my life to someone adhering to such foolishness.

Anyway, I would think his remarks would disqualify him as an appropriate choice for commencement speaker at Emory University.
