Go to: Apathetic Atheists: A Forgotten Resource?

I could have been described as an apathetic atheist until very recently, with strong opinions, but just not thinking there's much to be very engaged or active about. I discovered Christopher Hitchens just a few weeks ago, and watched some of his debates just for entertainment, enjoying his character. Hitchens's perspective of religion as a form of Orwellian totalitarianism was insightful. I developed an appetite for this sort of discussion, and I also heard audio of debates by Sam Harris, which really gave me reason to be much less apathetic. Christopher Hitchen's book God is not Great and Dawkins's The God Delusion were also instrumental.

I think there's a lot of value in the idea of doing this, but I gave up on it after a few minutes of rambling.

I think it would be a lot more valuable to do psychological studies of the experiences of people infected with religion, to more effectively help others to do so.

I'm pleased to see this attention to case studies of individuals who have overcome religious infection. Clues to the best ways of helping others to free themselves of this mind trap are surely in investigating the thoughts and realisations critical to this process.
