Go to: Trouble in paradise: Maldives and Islamic extremism

Not just any Islam is the official religion in the Maldives, it is Sunni Islam exclusively, please. There is nothing tolerant about that one.

Sometimes I wonder, what'll it be for the Islamic world? Can there be only either a brutal Dictatorship that is relatively open to the west OR an even more brutal dictatorship by demented fundamentalist Muslims? Is there no in-between? We're looking at you, Egypt.

The idea to have moderate Muslims change their handle - that'd be a pointless exercise. The foaming crazy radicals think they have every right to everything - up to and including abusing that new handle for their own horrible purposes.

Also I agree with Richard and others here - by and large, 'moderate Muslim' is an oxymoron. There are preciously few of them around to even summon up the courage to speak out publicly, so few as to not matter. Just as an example: Recently there was a murder here in Lower Saxony in a Yazidi family where the father killed his own daughter because he didn't like her desire for independence. Almost immediately the small Yazidic community congregated and held a demonstration-cum-mourning procession, making it clear that this was nothing to to with them or their belief, and demanding a hard punishment for the father once caught. More processions followed. You never see that with Muslims.

Or another thing: Recently, the UK seems to be more and more under attack from Muslims, demanding sharia law to be implemented, and that no one dare talk about Muhammad, or that pictures be removed from web pages... I could go on. Yet the same UK is also home to a large Hindu community, with its own set of beliefs, but for some reason they are so quiet as to be nearly invisible, demand-wise. They do not demand a ban for beef advertisements (or indeed, beef) even though cows to them are holy. They do not demand that nobody speak about their god(s), whilst threatening an audience. Maybe they should, if only to highlight how crazy things have become.

Remember the EU is not one country, it is a conglomerate and every country makes up its own rules. I'd guess he'd have best chances west of Poland and north of the Alps. Even better in a Scandinavic country.

I always assumed Satan was Calvinist, or rather that Calvinists are really Satanists. But hey, a nonexistent entity can be in more place that one!

To quote Ponder Stibbon's famous two axioms:

1. "Life turns up where it can."

2. "Life turns up where it can't."

Do I apologize to TP now or say thanks? Mabye both.

(Edit: Corrected the hideous misspelling.)
