"Fighting for country, not for god"

Hmm, can I re-phrase?

Shooting, maiming, bombing and killing armed and unarmed human beings in an area half way round the world, none of whom posed any threat whatsoever to you or anybody related to you (until you arrived in that area). On behalf of some land arbitrarily defined on a map. Having been sent to that area by a bunch of disgustingly rich individuals and businesses, in order to protect their own self interests at no cost to themselves, but at a disproportionally high cost to the lower levels of society.

Patriotism makes no sense to me. The belief that some lines on a map define a people denies all of history. The belief that the country of your birth is the "best" seems to me to be solely based on the fact that you were born in it.

Patriotism = jingoism.

The minute you start bombing non military targets you have lost all pretence to the moral high ground.

Oh, and any reference to either world war in discussing the present situation is bogus.

Can we stop being the world police now?

The same old reheated bollocks. Nothing new or interesting to say whatsoever.

Religion, absolutely no new arguments for hundreds of years.

In the feckin sack...

What a great story...

I would respectfully add "The Science of Discworld" series (and everything else) by Terry Pratchett. Anything by Douglas Adams as well...
