Personally, as someone who responded to comment #572090, which was instead focused on which societies are savage and which civilised, and therefore wished to judge a society only by the now and not the then, I frankly don’t care how long is the gap. Islamic societies are behind and must pull up their socks. (That’s not to say they are the only ones who must do so, incidentally, so don’t even bother citing other crappy behaviours as if doing so somehow lets anyone off the hook.)

I don't want to let anyone off the hook, thanks. I think each person is responsible for the good and evil they do. If these Pakistani Muslims kill anyone for blasphemy, they are morally responsible. If people in the West kill anyone in invasions, bombs, drone attacks etc., then they are morally responsible. The hypocrisy is that most people on this forum accept the first of those things, but not the second, because it would catch them too, or people they care about. Contrary to what you think, I was not excusing the blasphemer-killers; I was commenting on the ignorance and hypocrisy of the woman who said that they are savages and we are civilised, even as innocent people continue to get killed daily in Pakistan by the civilised drones.

I don't think I will be here much from now on. It's back to work time and I don't intend to be here much in 2011. I always feel like I should go and take a shower after I have visited this forum. I hope you all have a happy new year. I hope you opt for sanity instead of paranoia and hatred.

A part of the world called the past.

Thanks. But Ms Grant was talking about thousands of years difference between us civilised westerners and those savages in Pakistan. Was it really more than a thousand years ago that the white Americans almost succeeded in their genocide of the natives of North America, or the Germans in their genocide of the Jews?

There seems to be thousands of years between the civilized and the savage in our species. Thanks to quick air travel and global migration those that prefer Dark Ages primitive life are moving to the West and instead of getting up to speed quickly expect us to regress.

While we are talking of civilised people and savages, can you just refresh my mind as to which part of the world started the two world wars and built the concentration camps?

You want to call The Act of Union 1800 the document that established the CURRENT United Kingdom? Bad news for the Republic of Ireland, I guess. Also, that would still make the US Constitution older.

There's a level of stupidity which it is folly to argue with, so this will be my last response. Please apply this unique brand of logic to the USA and you will conclude that, as it has only existed in its current form since 1959, when Hawaii became a state, so its constitution must have come into existence in or after that year, since a country cannot have a constitution before it exists.

An ad-hoc amalgamation of documents which have the force of law does not make a Constitution....I am saying that because no single document establishes the state of The United Kingdom, it does not have a constitution.

Okey-dokey. You are free to differ from the courts and the legal historians of the UK. They say we have a constitution, you say we don't. Let's leave it there.

(Just as an aside, the UK was established by a single document, the Act of Union 1800.)

I fail to understand why you protest this

It's a foible of mine to object when someone makes incorrect statements.
