Deepak was so fucking angry. He was constantly interrupting and rolling his eyes.

Don't forget the volume of his voice... another symptom of his being aware that he is losing this argument.

Reminds me of Mike Myers. Myers does a pretty good Chopra impression, too, by the way.

85% of the country is religious, but only about 50% on average vote for republicans. That simple math ought to be enough, but anyone who needs anecdotes on top of data could come down to the South and meet a whole lot of hardcore democrats who are the most racist god-fearing bastards you could imagine.

That simple math combined with simplistic generalizations about politics, I guess.

For that matter, I wonder if anybody really knows the demographical statistical break down of Atheists. If I had to guess, in the US, I would say that ethnically, Atheists are made up of 95% whites. Also, 90% male. Politically, I would guess that they are 50% Republican / 50% Democrat.

Worldwide, I suppose the Chinese must make up the biggest block of Atheists. Or is that a big error on my part?

This is all just speculation on my part... not facts. It would be interesting to know the facts.

According to a 2008 Pew Research Forum study, African Americans are indeed the most "consistently" religious ethnic group in the U.S.

Which is why I wonder why liberals constantly refer to Republicans as the "religious right", as though only the right wing is guilty of irrational thinking.

rocket777, I agree with what you wrote.

Richard tends to take sides in almost anything that has political argument (and almost exclusively siding with the same political ideology on all of those issue), but in his defense, he did qualify his comments by saying first that he is not an expert and therefore doesn't feel qualified to discuss global warming.

Also, it should be kept in mind that political influence on these nominally scientific topics cuts both ways. It could be that the dire predictions related to man made global warming are too optimistic and rosy. We could be facing even worse warming than what is predicted. But, you are certainly correct to say that the evidence for evolution is massively greater than the body of information and evidence that can be relied upon for making predictions about recent atmospheric and temperature forecasts.

MuayThaiGuy:

While many Republicans may be of the "normal" religious strain pleanty of Democrats prescribe to the more esoteric "New Age" crap. These beliefs force policy same as the other. I would bet more Decomcrats believe in Homeopothy than Republicans.

And I'd also be willing to bet that the psychic hotline and UFO conspiracy theorists are also majority Democrat.

Sometimes the users on this site, i.e. the liberal douchebags you were referring to, on this site piss me off so badly that I have to go away and forget about RD.net for awhile. There are some alternative sites that I've visited like The Conservative Atheist.

But at the end of the day, I would love to be able to get along with both liberals and conservatives. This is a difficult thing to do.
