PZ is a bit of a duffer on this one (and the comments thread is hilarious). Of course, PZ never actually read the study, so it would be pretty hard for him to rebut it. I'm not sure why he has such demi-god like status among his fans. Arguably, a sure fire way to repudiate a link between intelligence and atheism is to point to the comments on his blog...

Anyway, s.k.graham above, and a number of other people elsewhere, have summarized the main points. Never mind the unorthodox views of Kanazawa, the study is pretty robust.

There is a link between atheism and general intelligence (that's pretty well established, despite PZ's huffing and puffing). Explaining the link is more problematic.

Kanazawa's hypothesis - that general intelligence allows us to overcome our evolved cognitive biases - is a reasonable one that he presents some evidence for in the paper. It's by no mean proven, and there's reasons to suppose it might be false. But it shouldn't be dismissed out of hand (especially not by name calling and mob hysteria).

Sexual abuse from religious authorities has been going on for centuries. It's only cos of the liberal, hippies and atheists that we've found out about it!

Although my article for New Humanist is not online there yet, Chris Street of Humanists4Science has reposted it:

It gives a bit more background, to explain why it's not such a banal thing to research :)
