Go to: Cancer is a disease

I've read quite a few of Barbara Ehrenreich's articles and it seems that she's not so much interested in attacking new age therapies, but attacking the notion that you should be positive about terrible diseases.

Well thats all well and good. People have a right to be miserable if they're dealt a bad hand, but thats also not an excuse to wallow in your own misery and expect people to care, which is what she seems to be doing. Most of her articles I've read seem to be just rationalising her own shitty attitude.

People with serious illnesses try to maintain an upbeat attitude not necessarily because its tied in with new age therapy, but because it keeps many of them sane, and it also MOST IMPORTANTLY, it helps keep their loved ones around them, as humans being human simply can't be around a miserable joyless cancer patient for long without being their closest friend or having a stake in their will.

"What is that now, the 50 millionth nail in the IDiots coffin? I wish we could all just go out for a beer and not have to worry about those clowns anymore. "

Well I was looking forward to reading the comment section until, sure enough, some "IDiot" had to bring up creationism again. Nobody mentioned ID until you just did. Why can't you just enjoy the science article for what it is - an ID free piece of interesting science. Do you know anything about science - by all means contribute. Its easy to not worry about "those clowns" - by not being a bigger clown and talking about them during any science discussion that begins here. This is the problem with this site - too many people obsessed with Creationism, and not enough interested in science.

Go to: Noah's Flood Debunked

No, they don't have to be countered. They have to be ignored and replaced with good science, which innoculates people against believing bullshit arguments to begin with. Most of the counter arguments I see are bad arguments with a poor knowledge of science, so it doesn't really do us any favours. There are an infinite number of irrational unscientific beliefs floating about in society, all have which have impact. Are you going to spend your life countering silly arguments that really just undermine science? Its not like they believe in it for rational reasons in the first place. What the hell is a rational argument going to do except make us all look like asses.

All this argumentcounter argument cycle does is promote a very negative, petty view of science that actually has a counterproductive effect. When people do think "Oh okay, I like this science stuff Richard Dawkins talks about - lets check out his site", can you honestly say that they'll see vigourous scientific debate? Click an article of choice, and count how many comments it takes before someone makes a bitchyjokey anti-Creationist comment. The average, I counted is 1. This is a sad reflection on us, and I include myself in that, because in effect, now I'm not promotingdiscussing science very well either, but hopefully I'll get back to that as soon as I can figure out how I can get people more excited about science, and less reactionary to anything that smells of a Creationist.

Trying to counter every idiotic belief is not the goal most people have on this site anyway - unless they're under the delusion that by commenting here they'll help educate those poor ignorant people in America, who read this website on a daily basis hoping for guidance, of course.

The most productive thing to happen from commenters was the Atheist bus idea, which didn't come from here. Shouldn't we promote a culture of positive promotion of what we do believe and cherish, rather than stooping to the level of verbal bitchslapping that most people do on these boards? Maybe then we might get somewhere, and get our message across, listened to, and understood a lot better.

Go to: Noah's Flood Debunked

Kentrel's Avatar Jump to comment 66 by Kentrel

The fact that we even give time of day to the debunking of Noah's flood shows how pathetic and stupid most of us really are.

This is a science website, that supposedly attracts scientifically minded people yet we seem to obsess over games of one-upmanship with Creationists - some of the worlds stupidest people.

I watched a little bit of the video, hoping it was more of a humourous piece like Penn and Teller's Bullshit, but for the most part it was a serious and thorough debunking, though with amateurish unscientific versions of scientific experiments.

The fact that we spend so much time thinking about, arguing with and debating stupid people is a poorer reflection on us than them. It raises their profile, and lowers ours. Will we be devoting time to watching a Fairies Debunked video, or Big Foot debunked, 9/11 Conspiracy Theory debunked, Moonlanding hoax debunked, Santa Claus debunked? It seems kind of silly to spend time on that now, doesn't it?

In fact, just by taking the denial of silly ideas seriously you undermine your own position and gave more weight to the silly idea than it deserves. Its certainly hard to believe someone is more interested in science when they spend time arguing with or making fun of creationists, than they are in giving themselves someone to laugh at.

Come on. We're science supporters here. Correlation does not equal causation. Common fallacy.
