How much more efficient than 1's and 0's would a quadruple-helix (perhaps with another set of base pairs as well) be in storing data? The quantum hard drive seems like a pipe dream to me, maybe this will suffice.

I get to show people a human brain next to a monkey brain and talk about the evidence for human evolution at work. I love my job.

Hearing them talk about death towards the end made me realize that atheists don't seem to be doing a lot to battle the sort of inevitable disappointment and fear that comes with realizing that the afterlife is a fantasy. My cousin just died this morning so I've been thinking about it. It's a privilege to live in the first place. The vast majority of the universe is empty space, and the vast majority of what remains is dark energy, and the vast majority of what remains is in stars. A tiny fraction of a tiny fraction of a tiny fraction of the universe even has the possibility of becoming alive, let alone conscious. On top of that, there were quadrillions of possible people who could have lived via combinations of sperm and eggs, but we've all won the cosmic lottery, and most people will never even live.

"there's no point pretending that death itself doesn't place a severe constraint on that appreciation."

I think death makes life all the more worthwhile and precious. I think I came to terms with the idea in high school, and I started enjoying my life a lot more. It's really great when you can learn not to take simple things for granted.

Besides, when I'm dead, I won't know it, so there's nothing to worry about.

Apparently the UN Human Rights Council doesn't give a shit about human rights. Ironic that they should be so named...

Time for the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster to start appointing official religous scholars or priests. Anyone who declares himself/herself a religious scholar now is within his/her rights to criticize any religion or cult.

I'm going to have a discussion over the phone with this guy tomorrw. Hopefully I can educate him in the more recent (since 1860) developments in biology and cosmology.
