Go to: Effect of the concept of hell on children

I had a conversation about this with Vyckie Garrison of No Longer Quivering just yesterday. Vyckie lived the "Quiverfull" (very fundamentalist Christian) life and then escaped from it, with her children, five years ago.

The fear and threat of hell was a very big thing, she told me, and it's one reason people stay. But the good news is that you really can let go of it, and realize it was an illusion.

It's inspiring to talk to her, because she is SO much happier now than she was before she left, and so are her children.

Go to: Ultra-Orthodox Jews Rally to Discuss Risks of Internet

Well done RDF-US for resisting this kind of theocratic nonsense. (See comment 3)

I wish the media would do a better job of not sugar-coating it. Note this from the piece:

The organizers had allowed only men to buy tickets, in keeping with ultra-Orthodox tradition of separating the sexes.

Excuse me, that's not just "separating the sexes" - it's flat-out letting men do something and not letting women do it. That goes way beyond mere "separation."

The New York Times can't possibly be unfamiliar with the phrase "separate but equal" and its history - and this isn't even "separate but equal"; it's separate and totally unequal.

Go to: Women in Secularism Conference- Washington DC

@ comment 4 -

I was following the #wiscfi hashtag this weekend, and the conference sounded awesome.

I was there, and it was. Elisabeth Cornwell, executive director of RDF US, was one of the speakers. RDF funded childcare for the conference. Jamila Bey (another speaker) was able to have her little boy right upstairs thanks to that.

Wafa Sultan was one of the speakers, and her talk was overwhelming. (I and others liveblogged it, so you can find a summary of what she said in several places.) I sat next to her at the dinner a couple of hours later and she told us that she broadcasts an Arabic-language tv show to the Middle East but she has to do it via a Christian station because no one else will have her. Jeezis, I thought and said, RDF should know about this; I must tell Liz Cornwell!!

I did tell Liz as soon as I could find her the next day, but hooray, she was already all over it. We totally agreed that it's urgent to pry Wafa away from the Christians and the right wing. She is ours not theirs.

I have never seen "men only" on a conference or meeting sign-up.

Well guess what, you didn't see it on this one, either.
