Traytheist said;

"That's exactly what I was thinking: heap scorn on the guy who can no longer defend himself. "I tried to do something, but that mean old man who used to be in charge wouldn't let me." Oh well, it's not as bad as the comparison to the Jews."

Yeah, well, then the new question is, "where was the investigation immediately upon your becoming Pope then, Benny?"

Personally, I think the best way for Richard to have dealt with Burke's offended sensibilities would have been to have paused thoughtfully for a moment and then said "yes, that's often the response of people who are unable to justify their religious positions using logic and reason".

My feeling is that would have cut right through the guy's position and made him look out-of-control.

Don McLeroy is a creationist dentist, and the former head of the Texas State Board of Education. He has worked systematically to try and get the teaching of evolution banned, or at least deemphasized within Texas. This has more widespread implications, however, since the Texas SBOE basically sets the standards that textbook writers use.

It would rather "fix the problem" so to speak, since if you ain't got no balls, you ain't got no sex drive. Go look up eunuchs, for more information.

One would have to assume that the genes responsible for the genetic change were not the ones being changed. If these genes were to change themselves, it would be undoubtedly "bad" for them, probably a loss of function.

It pays to remember that evolution happens at the level of the gene. In this case, the manipulating genes are being selected for, at least in organisms where they get their mutations "right", allowing the organism to survive.

Although I haven't read it all through (yet), if my explanation is correct, then so too is Richard. It is vitally important to remember that the unit of selection is the gene, not the genome.

[I posted this from the first page, and had not seen Steve and RD's replies. Essentially, Richard has said it better than I ever could. Oh, and Weregryphon, while you have apologized to Richard about your tone, you have not apologized for accusing him of ignorance yet.]
