This is nothing new.

I was working with self-inactivating lentiviral vectors to modify hematopoetic stem cells for transplantation in a lab in New York City 10+ years ago (I was just one of many people working in this lab mind you and make no claims otherwise).

Funny how these things make into the popular media at seemingly random times though.

Of course using something like HIV raises all kinds of safety concerns but it is one of the most well characterized viruses ever and it has some advantages over simpler viral vectors (though more stigma attached no doubt) such as adenovirus, etc.

Some vectors carry not much more than the the HIV long terminal repeats (though for self inactivating they have a deletion of the downstream one ... this allows it to make one and only one copy to insert into the DNA). Other vectors (like the ones they describe in this story apparently) use more of the viral apparatus. It all depends on the purpose for which these vectors are designed (the cell lines in which you want expression of the gene, etc.).

In any case the samples are screened for replication competant virus before using in humans. At least in the US the regulatory hurdles to this sort of thing are very strict.

Durring WWII, who was using the most amphetamine?

By the beginning of 1942, the British military had adopted amphetamine, by late 1942 the U.S. military had adopted amphetamine among aviation, bombing missions, and so on. The Marines had it at the invasion of Tarawa, one of the bloodiest battles of the war, the first opposed amphibious assault in the war against the Japanese. The Japanese, of course, had methamphetamine just like the Germans, so everybody's using amphetamine by this point in the war. Ironically, the Germans were using it the least by this stage, when the Allies were adopting it.

Everyone was using it then not just the Germans

As a former pediatrician I saw this type of thing way too much. Because of where I was located it was just as often with fundamentalist Jews as with any other religion.

Explain to me how torturing a child with futile medical interventions not even available when the Bible was written can possibly be the will of a compassionate sky daddy?

oh kshaw.... you do not even deserve a response ... ever

It is child abuse for a foster couple to take in a child who happens to come out later as gay and then to tell him or her that he or she is a shameful sinner for being who they are.

That is the bottom line plain and simple.

If this couple admits in advance that they would commit child abuse in those circumstances then they have no business being in the foster care system.
