WBC won't be "defeated" by lawsuits. They have home-grown a cadre of lawyers and stay strictly legal almost religiously. Since the lawyers are family members, the "court costs" being paid go directly to funding more bullshit protests -- and the harder the legal battle, the more money they get to charge for legal fees. If we sacrifice free speech protection for "hate speech" laws to protect us from the likes of the Phelps, they'll alter their behavior exactly to be legally compliant and not one whit more, still aggravating families in mourning and doing everything they legally can to disrupt funerals.

What ought to happen is the complete ostracizing of the Phelps family from public life, the publicizing of their donors and clients, followed by THEIR humiliation. Giving money to these people (and I include "suing on baseless grounds and being made to cover court costs") should be extremely expensive in other ways.

Go to: Christopher Hitchens and Stephen Fry vs. The Catholics

Favorite quote of the night:

"It's the strange thing about this church: it is obsessed with sex, absolutely obsessed. Now they will say, we with our permissive society and our rude jokes are obsessed -- no, we have a healthy attitude: we like it, it's fun, it's jolly. Because it's a primary impulse, it can be dangerous and dark and difficult. It's a bit like food in that respect, only even more exciting. The only people who are obsessed with food are anorexics and the morbidly obese, and that in erotic terms is the Catholic church in a nutshell."

Thanks, Stephen. An elegant analogy in the starkest (and truest) terms.

I'm all for helping minorities (liberal that I am) but in the end of the day if the numbers involved are tiny it makes more sense that they are givien protective clothing
This is perfect. Maybe we can make it bright orange, and carry a warning. How about:

Or even "Warning: Self-deluded"
