I agree as well. I noticed the same problem with The Colbert Report. I think, these shows are so dependant on youth culture as their context that Richard seems to miss the point. It's not that the jokes are above you...it's that without the context, you're not catching the meaning of the show and more often than that the meaninglessness of the show. South Park does META-humor and if you don't realize what level you're on, you'll assume it's stupid.

I think South Park, as well as Colbert, utilizes the fact that the intended audience is expected to keep track of when they are serious and where they're not, based on their own expectations that they have of the show's position on most topics. Wow, that was confusing.

People need to stop assuming comedy shows take their own opinions seriously just because many of their viewers do. South Park, Jon Stewart, Colbert, Family Guy, etc are meant to be funny. Since everything has a base in reality (including humor), they undoubtedly will all be social critiques...but that's comedy. It's about saying the stuff we normally don't and often can't say. Humor is an essential part of the changing moral zeitgeist, but it is only effective when we deem the jokes more important than the message. That's what freedom of speech is about...saying anything wether the funny weighs out the truth or not.

South Park is comedy...and if you're not laughing, jokes probably on you. And that's fine even if they haven't spelled out their position on every topic you deem of importance. It's a comedy, for Muhammed's sake!

Our species' "mental diversity" is definitely on display here. Not much genetic variation, but lots of phenotypic(memetic?) variation.

I honestly thought this was kind of obvious. Read up on male gorillas and you'll come to appreciate the correlations between mind and body once again.
