Not to be rude, Wilkinson, but I'm not taking about T.V. characters here. I'm talking about one of the most ethnically and financially diverse high school in my city, which I happen to currently attend. (and I live in Chicago, not Beverly Hills) The family of one of my friends DOES make approximately $40k a year and yet are expected to pay nearly as much in tuition. The truly poor normally do receive very generous scholarships from private universities such as this one, and occasionally from the very tight-fisted public ones. I highly doubt that this school will expect families making below 40k to pay full price.

It's the $40-$90k people who are properly screwed here when it comes to tuition. Too much money to qualify for substantial aid, too little money to be able to pay the expected amount without making any major sacrifices (such as selling their home). And despite all that we somehow manage. Just sayin'

To be quite honest, I don't see what you all are complaining about. This new college is DIRT CHEAP by U.S. standards, where a proper education can frequently cost $40,000-$50,000 per year. There are, of course scholarships/grants for those who are sufficiently lucky and/or poor. But many middle-income people have to take on those full costs with very little financial aid. I just finished my final year in high school, and judging by the finaid offers me and my friends have received, state schools and the federal gov. aren't feeling remotely generous for the coming academic year. And yet we're all going to university next year. I'm sure that many of my classmates would LOVE to have your financial problems. Saving up. Taking out loans. Applying for merit-based scholarships. You should try it some time.

Oh right you are, Carto. I nearly ate the carpet when I found out this morning. If other civil issues had been voted on this way, women and black people wouldn't have even had the right to vote until last year or so. But personally, this only serves to make me more determined than ever. It says something about this world when the fight for simple human rights is the most difficult battle. But the old, prejudice bastards against gay marriage will die off soon enough and the picture of the younger population is much brighter indeed.

Uh-oh. This is quite the worrying article. I really, really hope he'll turn out to be wrong. But seriously, it looks like atheists and variations there upon need to make the voice of reason more politically insistent among the many versions of BS that crop up regularly. *sigh* I do what I can...
