ill admit to the hostility, and i will apologize for it.

It irks me when people attack philosophy because the attacks are largely based on the assumptions that philosophy has become a relativistic load of hogwash. Much of it has because of the strange transition from theory creators to empty, improable hypothesis creators. The current public view of philosophy is that of a pluralistic, relativistic, rhetoric machine. What philosophy IS: the job of asking the right question.

If you mean to attack the philosophy majors who write their dissertation on Kant, or Nietzche(or who even support Kierkegard), those who specialize in the history of the subject, then go ahead. But some of us are serious.

Hmmm, Descarte was a what? anybody? How about Spinoza? Smith? Hume? Locke? I can keep going. Philosophy is important.

As for modern philosophy, someone tell Daniel Dennett that he is useless and consigned to history. Toss Russell into the heap as well? Philosophy is still valid and alive, but since the only philosophy course you (and most)took was 1001 Intro, nobody actually understands what the hell philosophy has become. You conjecture, so please stop.

MC

"A tiny minority of Christians seem to threaten people with talk of hellfire, in the modern world. A tiny minority of Christians campaign to get creationism taught in schools. Etc. Stop acting as if the small number of holier-than-thou hicks are representative of most Christians. "

Are you implying that the Gallup and other such organizations fail to properly think out the psychology of their surveys? What of sociologists, cultural anthropologists, psychologists, and Political Scientists? Should these "soft sciences" be done away with due to a lack of unifying theory which would allow for mathematical computations? We have a pretty good understanding of how humans behave, and i seriously doubt the scientific and peer reviewed journals they publish in would allow for such shoddy work as you seem to think is going on.

This is not internet polling, its scientific research.

EDIT:sorry. it supposed to be in response to this as well:
"Opinion polls on this subject are inherently unreliable (unless they're very cleverly done), due to the phenomenon of "belief in belief". Lots of people profess to be diligent Christians, and yet are seldom guided by Christian principles."

Go to: Arkansas might let atheists run for office, at last

Daedalus5's Avatar Jump to comment 5 by Daedalus5

I found this one today during my methods of political research class. I figure that if we can build support for the bill to allow Atheists to run we can correct these unconstitutional requirements in these states.

Please link this article to as many sites and organizations as possible.

ill gladly admit that "asshole" is not unique to religion, but they seem to suffer from an overabundance of it.
