Excellent rallying call....

The biggest message I got was Secularism is more important than Atheism, and I agree!

Watching any civil rights / Martin Luther King footage, I am always struck by the number of 'white people' that marched and stood strong for civil rights in the U.S.A. There are many similarities, and I think we need to get the 'moderate religious' on our side with strong separation of (any) church and state.

We are not tring to take the religion out of people, just out of our government, laws, and public institutions. I think religion is a great (but not only) source of community, provides meaning for many lives, and has many positives. It only seems to do any damage when mixed with government, law, taxation, schools, or other public institutions - danger never mix these two chemicals!

Focusing on real stories, real people, and real harm is an excellent approach, and we definitely need to take back the moral highground for secularists world-wide.

Go to: Morality as self-division

Hmm... I will stop using the word selfless and stick to altruistic...

Altruistic includes selfish acts of giving / empathy etc.. and appears to focus more on the final trade-off result, i.e. it cost the altruist more than they gained. Of course, the "equation of altruistism", namely calculating the cost and benefit is very difficult! Costs and benefits can be short / long term, and hidden or open.

I really liked the explanation that all acts flow through the self and are therefore always selfish to some extent - I think I better understand some of those Zen Budhist philosophies now!

The comparison to Solipsism is also very enlightening, and I can definitely see many analogies. Of course, it won't stop the religious claiming altruism / selflessness as an argument for their gods!

Sof if there are no absolutes in the world of altruism, are there still absolutes in the world of morals?

Of course, I find that what is so clearly articulated on this forum seems to stick so poorly in my brain and just disappears / jumbles up when I face occasional discussions in the real world!

Go to: Atheists Seek Chaplain Role in the Military

0penM1nded's Avatar Jump to comment 17 by 0penM1nded

Isnt the role of atheist chaplain already filled by 'forces psychologist'? I am very distant from any milatary organization, but I assume that Psychologists are provided to any and all who need them?

I can definitely see the problem with Atheist Chaplain's providing honest spiritual support to the religious troops! It would take an immensely open-minded atheist to positively encourage faith in gods they do not believe in - surely this must preclude them from the position.

Arguing for the abolishment of all Chaplains is of course a whole different discussion and sounds akin to removing the Church of England from the UK royalty!

Sorry... I am a little annoyed with Xian hypocricy right now as my friend's life lies in pieces at the hand of a so called Lover of god!

I know the majority of people (religious and non religious) are capable of great and hurtful things, and behavior of an individual does not prove or disprove their beliefs.

Didn't mean to offend - and I can't find a way to edit!
