Why does the quote thingy disappear so that I can't quote someone's post in reply?

Seven day trading ineitably results in big business getting bigger and small business dying out. The big businesses are the ones that can afford to open and they gain enough additional market share to make the small businesses uprofitable.

A day off in a community really only works if it is as collective as possible - for both business reasons and social opportunities.

...You are much less likely to die at the hands of your fellow man today that at any time in history.

Things are getting better.

With the unborn being a distinct exception.

Comment 12 by Isaiah40 :

Why is it obvious to the atheist that the morning after pill is right - or that rape is wrong for that matter?

Comment 29 by Zeuglodon :

As opposed to deciding right and wrong from, say, following a multi-century-spanning anthology of myths and legends, a voice in your head, and the cosmic equivalent of an argumentum ad baculum? In any case, this isn't the thread for that kind of discussion, so you should submit a discussion to the mods instead or find an existing one and comment on that.

Point taken about the need for a separate thread. My intent with my original question was that there seems to be an implied moral absolutism with this kind of thread. I believe that atheists can speak in terms of preference and consensus, but I can't see how they can claim an absolute position, which everyone should accept, in a purely material world.

Obviously, rapists would disagree with the view that their activities are "wrong". I am glad we can outvote them, because as some have rightly said, I wouldn't want it to happen to me - or anyone else. But there is no basis for saying that they are "wrong" in any moral sense in a naturalist worldview. The most that can be said is that we'd prefer this didn't happen, because we don't like it, and we'd like to use our dominance to prevent it from happening.

I was simply trying to keep the thread honest in the framework of its own worldview.

Rape is wrong because it violates the basic ethical principle which is "do unto others as you would have them do unto you", the Golden Rule. By the way it predates Christianity with wikipedia having instances going back to 1780 BCE. I would have thought it goes back our social primate ancestors.

Is rape therefore wrong in some absolute moral sense or just on the basis of cultural convention - a convention that could change to match other species that copulate without consent?
