Go to: Remembering Christopher Hitchens

This morning I was hit with another moment of the "blues" thinking about the passing of Hitch and feeling pretty sad... then I read Lawrence Krause's quote about being "exposed to Hitch" as a threat to "belief" along side of Nietzche and beer-pong and I laughed out loud... I can see the grin it must have brought to both of them! Maybe we should send each student on that campus a copy of Hitch's book, god is not great, and Dawkins' book, The God Delusion and let the "reality" happen! Thanks Lawrence-- all the best!

Go to: Biology test omits creation theory, complains Kentucky educator

Just another example of the brainwashed in America. This is a particularly big problem in the evangelical south where there is an outright hatred of science and education. It's enough to make a reasonable person crazy! All we can do is to make sure our children learn the facts and understand the evidence but the education system has, in large measure, been taken over by the religious zealots here in the South. Three years ago, I joined several other PhDs, and "testified" before the local school board to stop them from teaching creationism in the public schools. My "job" as a PhD in political science was to lay out the legal case and show them that they would be sued and, no doubt, lose as all other cases have been ruled in favor of science and against creationism. You have to understand that school boards are "elected" by local people who are led like sheep by their churches. Even this superintendent in the story is probably an elected official-- chosen for his biblical beliefs by the locals. He probably promised them to teach creationism before he was elected or "selected" by the school board, who are... sheep as well. It's getting worse all the time. These groups are getting more aggressive in all areas-- schools, county commissions, state legislature, etc. It's the Tea Baggers, past Klan, and religious freaks all together now... help!

Go to: Story of a Bible Belt atheist from Kentucky

Hate them! That's what I do and it works great. I just think to myself what fools they are--really, it's like an out of body experience when I hear colleagues blathering about Jesus and such. I live in a small college town too-- in Florida which is much like Kentucky (have you been watching the news lately?). Frankly, I thought all the religious nuts were here! No doubt there are people at the College in your town that share your views-- there is even a "pocket" of atheists at the college where I work. Occassionally we go to lunch together just to "get away from it all"! Beyond that-- get busy with your own life! First: If you need a pal--get a dog! They are unconditional love and never, ever "pray" (unless it is relentless chewing of bones!). Second: Get out of town on the weekend! Go to an uban location where real people live! Join a group there-- check out one of the atheist organizations within an hour or two drive time. Three: Join atheist nexus and network! and, finally-- Four: I agree with the rest! Move!

Don't laugh too hard... Here in Florida they will probably use this as a model for a charter school...
