Go to: O'Reilly vs. Richard Dawkins

O'Reilly's is addressing his target audience: conservative, not well educated, middle America - and the people who pay his wages who want to keep them happy. In that respect he is not very different from a mass of politicians, bureaucrats and many others who do their paymasters' bidding while settling their conscience by persuading themselves they are doing the right thing. O'Reilly just happens to have a job where this happens rather publicly. Within those terms he does the unpleasant job well enough, if over trenchantly. He isn't quite as stupid as we might conclude.

Go to: Rupture With Vatican Reveals a Changed Ireland

87 per cent of the Irish population identified itself as Catholic five years ago in the 2006 census. This year's census followed the Catholic Church's heartwarming display of concern for children and was accompanied by a campaign attempting to persuade people to avoid the rote response (based on their enforced baptism) and to complete the religion section of the form more reflectively and honestly. It will be interesting to see how far the 87 per cent figure has moved; I predict a figure closer to 70 per cent. Meanwhile I wouldn't bother quoting a statistic so far past its sell-by date.

Go to: Can religion tell us more than science?

I remember trying to read 'Straw Dogs' and trying to pinpoint why I felt the book was woolly and tedious. Here is another good example.

Please listen carefully. Few people think that 'religion is a relic of primitive thinking'. When you get that wrong everything you say after it is a waste of your time, and ours. We understand that human thinking was and is perfectly fine. The information they had to work with was primitive. Move on now John.

Her physical appearance is a thing of transcendant beauty when compared with the calculating ugliness of the mind revealed.

Go to: Is the Vatican cooperating fully with the Irish government?

The cult is in decline. When the Irish CSO releases the 2011 version of the census religion stats we ought to see the angle of descent increase sharply.
