Go to: UPDATED: Why I want all our children to read the King James Bible

I am a native speaker of English from an English-speaking country whose writers are rather highly thought of in other parts of the English-speaking world and especially England.

I have never seen the King James Bible and never so much as touched any Bible (even in court). I am not exceptional in this as the Bible is here regarded as being peculiar to Protestants. We did spend a lot of time in school reading all the greats of English and Irish literature.

And now I'm going to have to go and read the bloody thing.

Go to: Cardinal Brady will not resign over 'abuse failure'

The positive thing about this is that the growing stream of people leaving the Catholic Church in Ireland will increase. With five of the most liberal priests silenced by the Vatican, the hardliners, including Brady, are doing themselves out of a job as fast as they can.

Go to: Admitting you're an atheist while travelling in the Middle East

Someone threatens me and asks what religion I am, I reply 'same as you'.

Reminds me of the old Belfast gag where a guy is stopped and asked if he is a Protestant or a Catholic. 'Atheist', he replies. 'But are you a Protestant or Catholic atheist?'

I think RD was clear, precise and civil, as always, in the face of a two-pronged attack. It is always difficult to deal logically with those who are illogical and are hopping from topic to topic, throwing in asides and sneering, and in a TV forum where the interviewer is just looking for sound bites, it is nigh impossible. We shouldn't expect serious debate from TV, even the BBC. It is now merely an entertainment medium.
