Go to: Does Religious Liberty Equal Freedom to Discriminate?

mrjonno's Avatar Jump to comment 78 by mrjonno

Couple of points

Freedom of religion is an absurd concept, change it to freedom of belief where you believe in anything you want without fear of legal prosecution BUT that in no way gives you any rights to act on those believes.

Want to believe it ok to rape 5 years and sacrifice them to make sure the sun comes up, no problems act on try to so or encourage others to act in the same way go jail for a long time

Gays getting married in churches, as marriage is basically a secular institution that gives secular benefits and responsibilities absolutely no one should be allowed to get married in church gay or otherwise. That actually is the law in some countries specifically the Netherlands where all marriages are civil

If someone wants to get their wedding blessed and the priest is not charging he can do so or not down to his personal believes, if he charges as a business then he is required to bless anyone.

As for my real bug bear the evils of libertarianism, religion wants to warp society libertarianism wants to destroy it. 'Liberty' or 'freedom' are useful man made constructs in improving human happiness but thats all they are. They are nice luxury products of society like cars or iphones. They are not the basis for human existance.

And guess what every single action you taken including breathing harms others, every time you breath you pump out germs and if you have a cold and are are weak there is actually a chance of killing others. Should you be arrested for going outside with a cold no but replace a cold with ebola and I have zero problems with the state locking you up preferable with decent medical treatment

Don't know why Richard Dawkins wasnt on that bar clips to answer back.

I actually don't think the program was that bad as it a series and this one was dedicated to the views of basically religious in cultural terms only. A pretty common status , probably the most common view in the UK.

There are going to be further programmes in the series with arch atheists (Stephen Fry rocks) and Anne Widdecombe arch christian (who is entertaining in her own twisted way).

There isnt a need for a single program to be balanced

Fundamenentally both atheists and theists need to accept the final say in the healthcare and well being is society (via politicans/doctors/judges) etc not the parent.

In most circumstance the welfare will be delegated to parents but the ultimate authority has to be the state.

This goes beyond religion it goes into what it means to live in a civilized society

Islam has no central organisation and none of the major centres have come out with any statements regarding creationism. That isnt to say there aren't plenty of fundies who among many things don't like science.

So I stand by my point the only major religious organisations that believe in creationism are basically American churches

Have to remember 'creationism' isnt a chrisitan ideology its an American Christian ideology. Even in the 19th century creationism was dead long before Darwin.

No major religious institution believes in it outside the US
