Go to: Do we need objective morals?

Thanks VENIVIDIVICI123 for posting this. And thanks to Jos and others for commenting.

This is one of topics with which I struggle when debating christians who have studied the humanities and those who have read too much Aquinas.

When I encounter someone pushing OM it usually seems to be used as some sort of proof for a creator. Instinctively it appears to me to be irrelevant to the whole debate (for reasons I don't need to describe here). But I lack the skills to properly refute the claim.

Even though these discussions are likely over the head of many people like myself, and I don't like the idea of needing specific knowledge of philosophy or ethics to debate sophisticated Christians, I still find this useful.

Go to: Bibles in schools

Thanks for posting this. My email is on the way.

Incidentally, so far 55% of people on this Huffpost article have voted that bibles should not be handed out.

I'm actually a little surprised that the number isn't higher - though this poll is by no means representative of the Ontario population - since Ontarians in general are against religious schools.

Agreed. The author is getting slaughtered. And rightly so.

Go to: Worm-like fossil a 'distant cousin' of humans

The New Scientist article clarifies things a bit (and has a short video).

Although Pikaia was discovered a century ago, Morris says the latest results represent the first comprehensive analysis of all the fossils with the most up-to-date analytical techniques, such as scanning electron microscopes.

Worm-like fossil a 'distant cousin' of humans

I think this headline was used to get the reader's attention. That fact has been known for a while (and, like fuzzylogic said, is obvious). In God is Not Great, Hitchens says something to the effect that if the tape of history was rewound and replayed with this creature going extint, we wouldn't be here. (He may have been quoting someone else - I can't remember).

The real meat of the study must be the discovery of the notochord.
