Go to: Earworms: Why songs get stuck in our heads

Remember when the "Expelled" viral promo came out? At the time some people said that they found the refrain "Dick to the Dawk to the PhD" strangely catchy. And then Richard mentioned (I think) a passage from a story in which the phrase "punch in the presence of the passen-ger" gets stuck in somebody's head.

What interests me about that is that the phrase "Dick to the Dawk to the PhD" has an almost identical rhythmic pattern as "punch in the presence of the passen-ger" (or at least how I imagine it being said). Are some rhythmic phrases or melodic phrases more prone to sticking in our heads than others? What gives them their stickiness? Has anyone ever researched that?

How's this for early history of "So": the opening line of Beowulf.

"So. The Spear-Danes in days gone by..."

Admittedly, that's only in Seamus Heaney's translation.

This blows my mind, even though I don't really understand it.

@blitz442

Yes, I agree with both of your objections. I'm not a defender of postmodernism per se, I'm just trying to understand what is meant by it.
