Go to: New Agers and Creationists should not be President

This article reminds me that, like Roger, I see these two groups as being two sides of the same coin. But it's a counterfeit coin.

I started watching the Occult video on the suntimes page, and the guy reminded me of my mother, telling me, not that the "occult" was BS, but that it was the work of Satan. By saying that, they're giving power to the belief in the occult.

I dismiss it all as childish wishthinking, but in hindsight, I see that they set up generations of kids with the idea that if you lose faith in Jebus, there are some mighty powerful alternatives out there.

Not a new thought I'm sure, but I'm seeing that the whole new age thing is an obvious outgrowth of Christian inculcation.

I'd much rather have them teach children that the occult is BS, and then if they lose faith, they're just atheists.

Go to: Michelle Malkin: Atheists Should Be Treated Like ''Trolls''

This week 'Atheists are attacking Rudolph' (how dare they!), but next week Michelle will be on talking about how Atheists are using Rudolph to "water down the true message of Christmas".

How do they keep getting to have this argument both ways??

So I've been reading all this stuff on the "new atheists" and the "atheist schism", and have been trying to decide whether this is even a real issue and how I feel about it, when...

I'm driven by the above video to order The Demon-Haunted World from Amazon (never read it). I click on the button to "Surprise Me" with an excerpt and end up on page 300. (hey! It works with the Bible, doesn't it? Why shouldn't I get guidance on Carl Sagan Day by randomly reading excerpts from this book) Thus wrote Dr. Sagan...

And yet, the chief deficiency I see in the skeptical movement is in its polarization: Us vs. Them - the sense that we have a monopoly on the truth; that those other people who believe in all these stupid doctrines are morons; that if you're sensible, you'll listen to us; and if not, you're beyond redemption. This is unconstructive. It does not get the message across. It condemns the skeptics to permanent minority status; whereas, a compassionate approach that from the beginning acknowledges the human roots of pseudoscience and superstition might be much more widely accepted.

If I didn't know that my brain was evolved to find patterns even when none exist, I might think that this coincidence meant something. As it is I still don't know how I feel about the best strategy for fighting ignorance, but wanted to share.

Thank you Prof. Dawkins for explaining this.

I couldn't understand the Vatican's move last week. I mean can't people just go and convert if they want?? Splash some water, "Domine, domine", have a cracker and you're a Catholic.

This makes more sense now.

While recently looking for science books for my 5 year-old, we were shocked at the dearth of good material, while there are plenty of religious books out there.

We anxiously await Prof. Dawkins' next release.
