The people of Ireland are backward, socially retarded and emotional disabled by their religiosity. Sectarian violence there continues fostered by clerics that continue to dominate

Rubbish and untrue. Things are now changing. For example, Irish Prime Minister Enda Kenny's excellent speech was a pretty historic moment considering the country was once a Catholic theocracy. As for sectarian violence, where is this? Not in the Republic, maybe you mean Northern Ireland and even there it is virtually all but gone.

I have family in Ireland & I frequently visit. I think that very few people in England realise quite how much attitudes in Ireland have shifted following all the scandals.

This will come as no surprise for those who see the Catholic church for what it is.

The only small benefit that will come from this is that a few thousand more people will also understand this but, yet again, what a tragically high price has been paid.

Everyone I have spoken to about this (including bizarrely, some who consider themselves to be catholic) does not expect anything other than except the usual pathetic excuses ( "it was the 70s liberal culture, it was homosexuals") & attempts to convince people that its all in the past & everything has been sorted out now which, of course, it isn't.

I recall reading in an engtineering website about the adaptations to elevator control systems for Orthodox regions. The elevators are programmed to run continuously stopping at every floor so no has to commit the 'sin' of pushing a button. Conveniently ignoring the much more significant sin of wastefullness.

If I remember correctly, some ultra orthodox jews objected to going down in this kind of lift as their bodyweight assisted the lift's motion (which counts as work). Obviously going up was OK. Its not as though they are irrational about it ;)

Go to: Richard Dawkins to be new Archbishop of Canterbury

I've been saying for a long time that Richard should be in the house of lords.

I didn't see it happening this way but if it works it works.

I can't see him being very popular with the other 23 though.

Go to: Why Richard Dawkins is still an atheist

I tend to describe myself as an atheist when talking to most people & a 6.9 agnostic to those that I think will understand (none of these are theists).

If I make the merest hint of agnosticism to a theist they often advance silly arguments along the lines of "Well your obviously not sure (for some reason they always assume 50:50 not sure, no matter how you explain it) & I am sure so that even if the probability is somewhere in the middle even you must accept that its more likely than not." For some reason they believe that the truth must necessarily be somewhere between our two positions.

I usually end the conversation there. It really is not worth spending time applying reason & intelligence to unreasonable & unintelligent people. Life is too short.
