There's nothing wrong with shortcuts - as long as you are ready to question your results

Exactly. I am fairly confident that I am fairly intelligent. I think this because, well, I AM fairly intelligent and can see how I stand up in comparison to most other people when it comes to problem solving and generally figuring things out. However, I know I am not infallible. I want to be right about the conclusions I reach and in order to attempt to ensure this I question my conclusions. I try to take a position opposite mine and see if it has merit. I am aware that I have confirmation bias, get support from the 'echo chamber' I inhabit on the internet, and a myriad of other potential deficiencies in my thinking. Despite what the article claims, I think this awareness, coupled with actions to overcome these deficiencies, leads me to better, more sound thinking. How could it not?

I left commentary in the Gideon bible I found in my hotel room on the weekend. I usually just throw it out but this time I thought I'd underline certain passages and say what I thought about them. It might give someone pause for thought. Or a good laugh.

Go to: 'Space Chronicles': Why Exploring Space Still Matters

What "our ultimate purpose is" is, I think, what we make it. If going to the stars is something we decide to do because we can, and that provides us with a fulfilling sense of ourselves as a species, then I see nothing wrong with that as a goal.

Go to: 'Space Chronicles': Why Exploring Space Still Matters

There is a real, but often overlooked, connection between science and art. On one level science is a quest to know how things work, how they 'really are'. I am not sure what art is. However, there is certainly an aspirational aspect to great art. Great art takes us to places in our minds that we would not otherwise know. Great science can do the same. Whether or not there is a practical benefit to either brings into question what our ultimate purpose is.

This is the audience for that commercial:

Ricky on self smarting himself

There is only so much brain that you can use. If you fill it up with learning and stuff you won't have enough oxygen for other things.
