Go to: Does Religion = Superstition? G-D Forbid!

secularjew's Avatar Jump to comment 18 by secularjew

Rob W., why are you writing G-d instead of God? Is there something you're not telling us?

Please be aware that Jews are also an ethnic group, not just a religious group, even if most Jews are both of these things. Culture evolves and is different things to different people. I'm Jewish ethnically, not Jewish religiously, and whatever minimal role Jewish culture plays in my life, religious culture plays practically none. And just because some ancient elders came up with the nonsense about Jewish faith being matrilinear doesn't make it true.

Go to: Rise of religion in Russia

I think people on this thread are seriously overstating the role Putin plays. He may well find religion useful, but he did not bring religion back to Russia. In fact, for a politician to use religion, it already needs to have its hooks in people. And as long as you don't pose any threat to him and are willing to play ball, Putin sees no need for repression. It can also be beneficial for church leaders to be in bed with him. Part of the official narrative that Putin wants to promote is that Russia is a free country where everything is allowed (unless you cross him). If you take Putin out of the equation, not much changes regarding religion in Russia.

Well, according to this: http://www.iheu.org/node/1213 only 15% of Russia is religious. Amazing that 85% of the population are being dominated by a minority of swivel-eyed loons. Anyone can be a Pussy Riot, apparently. Time to get organised...

I doubt those are the correct numbers. Here's a serious study on the changes in theism and atheism by comparing their levels around the world in 1998 and 2008.

STEWARD1, you asked an excellent question. As a former citizen of the Soviet Union, I too share your puzzlement and frustration at this increased religiosity.

But why assume that the public was ever atheist? They did not go to church or practice religion, but that wasn't because they understood why religion was false; it was because they had no other choice. If you actually understood that religion was superstitious nonsense, you did not suddenly become religious once religion was allowed. People are conformists, and when no religion is the norm, the people act accordingly (and contrary to what is often believed in the West, people can do just fine without religion) . Once communism fell and they were told that there was a God, they believed it. As to why people would believe in God in the first place, that's a more serious question.

Go to: Ghost seance goes wrong

If you are unable to placate the superstitious, you can perhaps speak the enemy's language (like in this clip from ZERT: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SGZX7oaDcQE ). For example, you can make mention of ghosts in the Bible (I'm sure the internet can help you with that), or perhaps push the nationalist button by mentioning the ghosts in the rich tradition of Czech folklore. Perhaps you can point out how you are ridiculing ghosts, and do not wish to give the kind of respect to the black arts that this woman seems to be giving. True Christians with Jesus in their heart have nothing to fear, and every story of the devil is a story about the need for Christ and his ultimate triumph. Why, you're practically doing God's work. But perhaps, you can just dismiss these charges as what they are: ridiculous. "Please, people, are we gonna be banning Shakespeare next because some ignoramus thinks Harry Potter is based on a true story."
