Go to: Bill Maher Slams 'Extremist' Muslims On HBO's Real Time

Maybe Bill Maher deserved the AAI award, maybe not; I like Bill, but I'm glad I have no say in the matter. But regarding Bill's comments on medicine, science, religion, etc., I'm fairly sure he has no doctorates in any of those fields. First and foremost he's a comedian, and everything he says should be taken in that context, no matter how serious he tries to be.

I'm not saying he tries to get a laugh every time he opens his mouth -- obviously, that's not the case. But when he makes a serious comment regarding medicine or any of the sciences, remember he's a comedian first, then take his comment for what it's worth.

In Comment #485375, stanleygarden mentioned George Carlin. George himself said that a comedian's main job was to think up goofy shit. Bill's not far from that goal.

A comment to the original article

"Barry Cassidy wrote:
Thou shall not kill, thou shall not steal, thou shall not bear false witness - THE most important points in our criminal legal system only exist because they are based on Christian teachings - why, the whole basis of what is right and wrong in the modern, Western world is based on the teachings of Christ and owe nothing to any other religion. What idiots these Judges prove to be, time after time after time."

What happened to Moses?

Ah, yes -- Moses. One of the great christians of all time.

We're going to have a vacancy on the United States Supreme Court in the near future. Do you think there's a chance Lord Justice Laws would be willing to consider the job?

Go to: Conservatives Say 'Don't Ask' Repeal Would Hurt Military Chaplains

Ron Millam's Avatar Jump to comment 35 by Ron Millam

You think there's a chance that the repeal of Don't Ask Don't Tell might force some of the more bigoted chaplains to leave the military? Sounds like a win-win to me.

The whole idea of military chaplains is ridiculous and nonsensical. Also, since it is America we're talking about, unconstitutional. The army is a secular institution, just as much subject to Jefferson's Wall of Separation as any other.

.........and ........

Get rid of all chaplians, military and non-military. A soldier can find a civilian preacher, priest, imam, rabbi, etc. whenever they need one. We should not be using government money for this nonsense.

I've been saying the same thing on a couple of different threads here in RDF. I've also sent an e-mail to the good folks at the Secular Coalition for America. Maybe if a few more of us started to raise a stink we might be able to rattle a few cages in the Pentagon.

I doubt that I'll ever see this change -- it won't happen in my lifetime. But it's got to start somewhere.

"It is investigating a claim that Jack Sullivan, a deacon from Boston, Massachusetts, was cured of a serious spinal disease after praying to the cardinal. "

Last winter I prayed to Robert De Niro and 10 days later my cold was cured. Where to I write to nominate him for sainthood?
