It is indeed.

It's years since I read Fred Hoyle's fictional "Black Cloud", but at the time, he put up a pretty good case for non planet based life. It seems the "steady state" idea is enjoying something of a comeback. Maybe Hoyle didn't get it all wrong, well he certainly didn't.

I may be mistaken, but I seem to remember an article some years ago about the mating habits of the damsel fly. The females mate with many different males. The males' strategy is to extract the sperm already deposited before they release their own sperm.

Let me know if I got it wrong.

It's still better to have a reasoned argument against your opponent. Even if THEY don't accept it, the watchers may be influenced.

How else do you oppose an argument for the creation of the universe in 6 days except by reason and knowledge based on science?

Yes I know, ridicule has its place, in fact a very good place, but in the end, we must rely on reason.

In South America too, the pope has a problem, because they are reverting to the indigenous religions.

Intellectuals or not, the Catholics are speaking with their feet, not their knees.

Da'Arcy - I sugegst that you get some training in economics before you start trying to lecture the world on the subject matter. No economist gives a stuff about what you claim.

Thank you for your considered response about why Marx was wrong on the LTV. An argument from authority, I take it? Economists are worse than theologians for disagreeing with each other. What I would appreciate is Roger Stanyard's argument as to why the labour theory of value is "utterly wrong".

If human labour applied to natural materials is not the source of all wealth, then what is?

Economists also teach that banks can and do create credit,(meaning actual spending power), in which case I wonder why so many of them have been in trouble recently.

Books can only be sold and distributed AFTER they have been written, published and printed. The same goes for loaves of bread, polish, computers or any other commodity you care to name. The people who work in Waterstones may not be creators of wealth, but their employer realises a part of the total surplus value by employing them, and can, hopefully, still make a profit by doing so. The circulation of commodities is part of the process of capitalism. "Unproductive" workers like those who work in banking and insurance (or book selling) still provide profit for their employers. Otherwise they are put out of work, witness BT and the like. Sorry Roger, you have to look at the system as a whole, not just the workers in factories.

I repeat that wealth can only be created by human labour applied to nature given materials.

NMcC - Thanks. Let's call it a truce. Life is too short to bicker on about this.

I would hardly have thought the question of how wealth is created is a matter of bickering. The circulation of wealth ( a la Waterstones) can only happen AFTER it has been created.

D'Arcy - thanks for the URL on the labour theory of value. It's utterly wrong.

Roger, it was you who introduced Marxism into this thread, so it's fair game as far as I'm concerned.

If you think that the labour theory of value is utterly wrong, you are also writing off Aristotle, Adam Smith, Benjamin Franklin and Ricardo, whose ideas Marx adapted.

If it's not human labour that adds value to commodities, then what is it? I know you are too sensible to believe in magic. Surely wealth can only be created by human labour plus natural materials. Incidentally the LTV was not fully developed in Wage Labour and Capital as Marx later pointed out. At that point he had not worked out the distinction between labour and labour power. Forget Yugoslav syndicalists, and please explain why Marx was wrong, specifically on LTV.

Marx got a lot of things wrong, but I think he got LTV right.
