What always amazes me about these self-deluding pseuds is that they seem smart enough to write articulately but not smart enough to be embarrassed about the utter guff they write.

That is the most delightfully subtle dig at...cough... a certain rather irritating female atheist I have seen recently. Top marks, sir!

I want them rendered powerless to have any effect on state, social or educational matters. I want laws prohibiting religious practice being foisted on minors. I want all religiously-based circumcision and similar forms of religious child abuse outlawed. I want these people castrated, metaphorically speaking. I'm far more interested in keeping them shackled than in (de)converting them, although if that happens it's a bonus. They have to do that for themselves, though. As most of us who were once religious did.

JackR's Avatar Jump to comment 33 by JackR

No, no, no, you are not over reacting. It is when the religious try to force their nonsense on to kids that we should react the most. The indoctrination of impressionable children has been their tactic for centuries, and sadly, it works. Let these people know of your displeasure. Give 'em both barrels.

I've never heard of this man before, but he's a true hero who deserves to be better known. Take a look at the rest of the stories on the "Read more" link.

He's quite wonderful. I first saw him challenging a "mystic" to use black magic to kill him (which the mystic had claimed he could do)

Although humorous, holding up a sign with blatant profanity like the one in this picture, does nothing but reinforce the "militant atheist" argument. It also insults the person it is aimed at. Insult his position, not the person. We should rise above that sort of thing.

Balls to that. Because being respectful and deferential to the religious has always worked so well in the past, hasn't it?

Well, there's a shocker.

This was obviously an experimental error from day one. Anyone with a decent understanding of relativity knew that - even the scientists who performed the experiment. Unfortunately, and is so often the case, the people who didn't know very much about physics made the most excitably uninformed racket about it.

I couldn't agree more, Richard. No one should be prosecuted for merely expressing an opinion, or even for insulting someone. That applies to people whose opinions we dislike, too. If freedom of speech is to mean anything that has to be the case.

I've been told I'm going to hell by street preachers too. Come to think of it, many years ago I was told I was going to hell by my own mother. Maybe I should have prosecuted her!

Society is definitely becoming absurdly hypersensitive about "offence".

It's easy. It's the rubber/glue game. If we're a religion too, then every time we attack religion, we're attacking ourselves. It really is that simple. Playground-level stuff.

The way to deal with dumbness - and, indeed, offensiveness - is to mock and satirise it, not to ban it.
