The thing about it is those two, young and rosso. I checked the pair of them on Wiki, and they are weird. rosso believes the 9/11 twin towers disaster was the result of a controlled explosion, shes a republican and manages his campaign, he's a democrat. he still got ten percent of the vote in the democratic candidate elections in rhode island. these people are mad eyed middle aged on the make 'dont knows'.

America is a scary idea to me, but with the religious attitudes taken by education in britain, I cant really offer an alternative catholic schools, moslem schools, jewish schools, it all seems liberal enough, but in the end it's despotic. Prof Richard's ideals are far from achieved.

Religion, hymns and crap, were a regular enough occurrence in my schooldays, our father this, if I should die before I wake, amen, all that. We never even called it a protestant school, but it was, and we were taught protestantism.

That 'girl' has sense, guts and gumption. Her critics can do little more than repeat abusive cliches at her. She studied on her own, and the degree of her capacity to express and to assert herself as a U.S. citizen articulately demonstrates just how inadequate cranston's 'education' is.

Bravo Bravo Jessica Alquist.

I think the quakers are a bit 'murky' as Dan Dennet might say. They have 'supers' as well as brights obviously, but that makes it a bit murky overall, like AA. There's always that 'higher power' thing in the background, nibbling away at rationality. Surely you're not losing your objectivity Steve?

David Cameron doesnt seem to get that the problems in "the community" are largely being caused by the religion of the community. Watching the tv programme "River Monsters" last night, i saw the presenter extremely worried by the fact that the chief of the villiage on the congo he was fishing from, was missing. The reason? Some of the villagers had intended to stone him to death if the chief wasnt found alive, the assumption being that the presenter was "bad medicine".

Religion and education are mutually exclusive. That's the point Dave.

Stop trying to cut the education bill by passing the buck(s) to relics of outmoded belief systems.

Go to: God Sent Christopher Hitchens to Hell Because He Loved Him

Ali Duncan's Avatar Jump to comment 171 by Ali Duncan

Sent this to fox:

I just watched Brian Fischers contemptible attempt to scare people. Christopher Hitchins is dead. There is no hell, no heaven. There is no god, but if thats the kind of interpretation the advocates of christianity place on love, then I am deeply grateful not to be allied with them.

Hitchens was a brave man who said he did not believe, and put forward his good reasons for disbelieving. I did not need to be swayed by his arguments. Yet instead of mourning a lost 'soul', Fischer gloated over his death. I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't seen it, the assumption that Hitchens would "defy" a god if confronted. The whole point of Hitchens arguments was that there was no evidence to support the existence of god. To suggest he wanted to burn in hell was a sadistic projection that says much more about Fischer, who obviously relishes Hitchens fictional torment in hell, and presumably relished his factual suffering through cancer.

I don't believe in god, and neither does my father. They say there are no Atheists in foxholes, which I don't believe. There are certainly some in dugouts, which are the british equivalent. My Father was one of them, all the way up through Italy with his bren gun. Brian Fischer would send him to hell as well I suppose, along with the fascists he fought. Maybe not, since German belt buckles had the words "Gott mit uns" inscribed on them. The vatican would be just another plaza in Rome were it not for Musollini, yet fascism is labelled an Atheist concept when in fact it is a roman one.

Hitler was a Roman Catholic, and doubtless wished the Jews in hell, along with Hitchens, so you see, I understand religions in general as a fearful concept rather than a loving one, bar bhuddism, and fischer as a particularly nasty advocate. As for his qualification, "If the gospels are real" I say they are not. They are works of fiction, selected and edited by the church to frighten people into submission. The worst of it is so many are. 13 million people died of aids in Africa before the pope allowed the use of condoms, and I call that murderously irresponsible. It's simply what atheists are up against.

Yours sincerely

Go to: Why We Believe in God(s): A Concise Guide to the Science of Faith

Ali Duncan's Avatar Jump to comment 46 by Ali Duncan

We need good short easily understood books about this particular subject, since so many people attribute so much of thier own genetic good nature to their religion, or religious culture. It's great having big guns like Dawkins, but the real groundwork lies in educating people who are used to learning in parables. Most of us I guess can relate to a good metaphor. It's ironic, but the photograph used on the cover of this book was sent to me recently, by a religious friend who loves trying to convert me. It was under the banner "The eye of god!!, and i had to send it on to 11 people to get the blessing! Talk about conditional love. I replied that god does indeed apparently have blue eyes, and hitler was right. This in nauseated ironic contempt.

But she's the type who needs to be told these things in repeated, gentle tones till she cracks the church habit. I hope to buy her a copy.

Salt is overestimated. It's simply a medium through which the defrosting properties of religious blessing are transmitted to the road surface. Blessings do work, but they have to be accompanied by some ritual or other, such as drilling for miners, road gritting, or indeed the discovery of new planets. When will people learn.

It's brilliant stuff. That chandra xray telescope is fantastic. Oppenheimers most perceptive observatons did seem to be about destruction, ways things could be destroyed. Philosopher Andrew Harrison, author of "Making and Thinking" once convinced me all creation implies destruction, since the two are sides of the same coin. Images like these stretch that hypothesis to an exhilirating extreme, conceivably falsehood.

@mark on the river

The evidence you demand of your own snide accusation of racism is this comment you made taken from the thread Britains Islamic Republic, referred to by yourself: “Those brown skinned people all look the same, eh Hugh?”

The evidence you demand of your own snide allegation of anti semetism is this:comment 9 above: you'd be herding those Jews into the gas chamber with a smile on your lips, wouldn't you Roedy?”

You exhibit anti-dyslexic feelings, which leads me to believe you consider spelling disproportionately important in conveying meaning through the medium of the written word.P

I am no cheerleader for people like Hugh. my purpose in this forum is to resolve and rectify where necessary and if posssible, my own erroneous opinions, which currently are running thusish:

Abrahamic religions all exhibit the same disgusting disregard for human life , and I wouldn’t seek to defend anyone from criticism on religious grounds. I cant and wouldn't apologise for having had moslem, jewish, roman catholic friends, and that they could all talk plenty bullshit on the subject of god, any more than I would refrain from kissing someone because they had hiv, or not be friends with someone because they had jargon aphasia. They're in trouble, not inhuman.

The desert tribes have always hated each other. From city gods to one god, the question of religion was a strategic numerical one. The rest of the world has moved on, but only a fool would deny Islam is the latest lethal manifestation of a pernicious political concept based on some wanking monkey named jehovah.

Your posting simply seems to me to be pot blacking reactionary invective against people like HughCaldwel, the unmindful one, and against roedy, which seems generally neither scientific nor reasonable to me.

I admit I cannot bear to watch this film.I’ve seen too many sick films on you tube, and the moslems are always in there. Killing killing killing killing. Murder is disgusting, as is barracking. Religion has to go. “but not through wounds, not on the cess of war” as Wilfred Owen put it.

I am guilty of using invective myself, but my peice is said. Reaction over. Thus I have nothing to add save I shall be taking the advice so generously offered in comment 60.

@Roedy If any group had a legitimate case for anti-Semitism, it would be the Palestinians. The result of a revenge spiral is ugly, but the Jews in Israel clearly provoked this. After what they did, they have no leg to stand on to complain.

I may not like what you say, but I comprehensively agree with you. I can see no sign of specific anti semitism on your considered and amusing website. @ Mark on The River: Thanks for making your position clear. I'm getting used to some posters here now. Icannt say any more about HughCaldwell, but my interest in this topic is quite intense.

@Dave H: I was a firefighter in central london, Shoreditch F24 Blue, for fourteen years. When the Liverpool street bomb went off half a mile away, I was in the watchroom.

I wasnt on duty when the natwest bomb went off,but the devastation in my own stations ground showed for a long time after.

Docklands was another I saw, being regularly outstationed often to Millwall on the isle of dogs.

I dont claim the scale of those atrocities matches the dreadful anguish of poor New York, but I think you have to give a fuck. Imprinting of a hateful incident, Anglo Irish or Arabic American, wont fix it. My mum left me in a housefire when I was six months old. The damage is done.

Muslims are as tearful as anyone else when you get them safe. You cant look at people at their worst and say theyre not worth anything. You only really see folk at their best in adversity, and every Muslim I've ever met was as every bit as good as me. I've known a few, including Mohammed Ali, who voluntarily drove a supply truck to Bosnia, and I was very proud to call him a friend. And I've probably released several hundreds from lifts, as well as sporadic fire situations. I worship anyone who can magic up a Lamb Madras. I wouldn't judge a person for being Irish either. I love Tralee too much.

It's Islam that's warping them the way Rome warped Gallileo, the jews warped spinoza, paisley warped the protestants. I'm a picto* scottish ex protestant atheist. You have to give a fuck before you're worth a fuck. Check the hangings, and the fightbacks in Iran, and see if you give a fuck then me old mucker.

@Nykos. I have a better idea. Why not let germany run Israel and Palestine. Geermany has a great record on industrial growth and unification, theres the word I'm looking for, and they're very democratic. Only a nihilistic atheist would deny them the opportunity to demonstrate their benificent humanism. The nazis are long gone, it's in the past. This I know because the pope, ex hitler youth, tells me so. You'll call me sick for that, maybe rightly, but that's exactly how I view your particular form of sleazy evasive denial.

Both my grandfathers and my father as well, were soldiers. Everyone in Israel is a soldier. They are warlike.

America is terrified of losing the jewish vote, so theres the influence of the torah for you.

The Palestinians have been shat on by the whole world, since Lawrence rode with them, and it's nothing to do with Islam. Israel is shitting on the Palestinians because everyone else does it too, because they can, and the Palestinians are disenfranchised, and angry.

The arabs are semitic as well, yet what love do the Israelis show them? Theres no anti semite like a jewish anti semite, the answer to arabic disenfranchisement does not lie in allowing themselves to be shafted by their oppressors, any more than it was appropriate for those millions of desperate emaciated innocents who haunt europe yet, and will do for a long long time to come. You're a troll Nykos.

Lots of people I have known are dead already, many to cancer. I admire Christopher Hitchens in his courage no more than one Don Martin, ex southern railwayman, who had the same disease, and approached it with a cynical stoicism I could never match.

My cat died. She had a fit at four in the morning, hyperglcaemic after years of insulin, and I put her down at mid day. I wish there was euthanasia for folk, because I swore the cat would not go natures way on dying. Too cruel for a friend. The same for Mr Hitchens.
