Go to: Melvyn Bragg attacks Richard Dawkins' 'atheist fundamentalism'

shemonster's Avatar Jump to comment 113 by shemonster

“We start with emotions and passions and feelings, the roots of which we don’t know and perhaps will never know,” he said.

“Things come to us outside the realms of reason; intimations of love, surprise by joy, little pulses that we don’t know where they come from, we don’t know where they lead to, but they satisfy us or they make us despair. Dawkins shows no respect for religion at all.”

Gosh never knew Bragg was such an ignoramus.

The good news is that Ofsted is taking homophobia in schools very seriously, and schools that fail to promote an inclusive environment for LGBT pupils will be downgraded in inspection reports.

Well that's all very good but how does it sit with an education secretary who says it is all fine and dandy for the RCC to hand out the leaflet below in their schools?

"Pure Manhood: How to Become the Man God Wants You to Be," which says that "the homosexual act is disordered, much like contraceptive sex between heterosexuals" and "both acts are directed against God’s natural purpose for sex - babies and bonding."

So some agreement that Faith schools if they are Muslim are a bad thing and that Muslims won't intergrate until they are banned. Why can't they make the connection that the way forward is to ban all faith schools?

a) get rid of all faith schools

For me, the solution must be found in the education system: it's shocking that children of Muslim parents in the UK can regularly come out the other end of 13 years of state provided primary and secondary education with abhorrent religious beliefs that are substantially less moderate than those of their parents.

And yet the jokers we did not elect to govern this country refuse to regulate madrassas despite clear evidence of abuse.

To focus only on madrassas would appear discriminatory and could reinforce unhelpful stereotypes.

Putting 'appearance' before the welfare of 250,000 children.

Waste of space the lot of them. Looks like their poisonous version of sunday school will continue unchecked and unregulated.

Anyone have a link to these statistics or even know where they 'emerged' from and how reliable they are before we get carried away with our comments? I would like at least to see a breakdown of the figures before commenting.

The figurines of the goddess Ashtoreth that have been discovered in Palestine are of a nude woman with rudely exaggerated sex organs

Hey that's Yahwehs wife you are talking ill of!

Well it makes sense to me. If god hadn't had a wife and made us in his own image we'd be hermaphrodite surely? And is it only me that has a sneeky liking for Yahweh's sister Anath and her trophy girdle? She was some warrior. Why you emphasis that it was mens heads she cut off I don't know. Didn't men cut off other mens head in war too?

It makes no sense at all that you conclude that Cannanites do loads of bad things because they are bad but Yahweh does loads of equally bad things, carring on the family tradition, because he is good. Double standards at play? Totally bonkers.

Joking aside I do hope these fundamentalists continue to be this vocal on UK forums. Nothing shows the son of Ashtoreth and El up for what he is the way they manage to. A myth and a legend along with his mum and dad and his 69 brother and sisters. Oooo 69 that will upset them all.

It's a male power trip, plain and simple. Take away the superficial doctrine differences, i.e. the names of the god they cast in their image, take away the costumes and the rituals, and you are left with the same sociopathy. Loathing of women and women's bodies, and the need to prove their prowess by inseminating those vessels with sons. It falls just short of phallic worship.

Absolutely. I'm so sick of religion and the platform it gives to the misogynist to spew such vile poison.  .

shemonster's Avatar Jump to comment 22 by shemonster

Take it from my 15 year old daughter RE (Philosophy and Religion - compulsory at her Wiltshire secondary school to GCSE level and a complete bore) is for her simply:

a. A joke b. Good fun - running rings around their clearly christian teacher. Sorry clearly I meant debating with. c. A free A* GCSE d. Nap time, as and when necessary

There is not (she informs me) a single student in her class that takes it remotely seriously. But on a serious note it is not proselytising it is a comparative course.

Don't fret about it, learning the ridiculous claims each and all religions make just hammers home to the younsters that they can't all be right and most certainly can all be wrong.

I'm kind of with JayG here. In its historical context, this was small stuff, and America has been grossly, obscenely overreacting ever since. There were fewer victims than the IRA created in Britain, with enthusiastic "patriotic" funding from Irish-Americans, while America shredded whatever vestiges it might once have had of any extradition treaty with Britain to avoid handing over known terrorists.

Yes spot on Steve. Your thoughts on 9/11 were identical to mine.

This is no different in principle from two non-Muslims choosing to agree to an out of court settlement or agreeing to be voluntarily bound by the decision of a non-legal 3rd party impartial arbitrator.

Pretty sure British Arbitors don't work on the premise a woman's testimony is worth half of a man's. Also pretty sure it's voluntary.

So actually not the same principle at all.
