This is a game show for the average person, not an academic audience so amazing feat of scholarship would not be required. It also strikes me that most thinking non believers in the Bible usually have read the book and the context it was created more than the average believer which could work against any one from our side. I still can get people to drop their jaws when I quote Sam Harris's comments on slavery from the Timothey, they just don't believe it.

However, it would be a wonderful PR piece if the majority of people playing the game were not believers.

The Czar of Russia is created by God, to go against the Czar is to go against God. Besides I think the Church wants its serfs/slaves back like in the age of faith. For one thing children of serfs are easier to molest-seems to go along with priesthood of any kind. Unfortunately in many democratic oriented societies, many want to be uneducated peasants, less stress with taking responsiblity I guess.

Isn't it better that the lower classes not get asperations and stay happily exploitable drones who will not cause problems with critical thinking and accept what their betters tell them through religious minions?

This does not say much for having universal sufferage, but the US lost that when anyone who owns stock in a corporation doing business here can buy into our election with out using their real name.

There is also the added benefit that one will be more acurate in determining a person's class and education level by asking a few science questions.

As that great example of a Catholic education, joining with all the other Catholic educated justices, Supreme Court Justice Scalia said about Citizens United, he did not like it but the people made him do it which is why he supported it.

My problem is I know more about the Bible and Koran than most believers and the salaried religious people don't want to debate they want to convert. Religion teaches doing what your told so free and critical thinking is not practiced so a debate seems to always be taken as an argument or put down. Nothing I like better than have a argument when I am in a pissy mood, but until a person has made the intellectual journey and feels confident in their own leadership I don't think any discussion works. The couple of friends who have come around, have been because we worked together on causes and rubbed off on each other.

I think the best show to get people to leave organized religion this year was the Republican Presidential debates, only a true believer would believe these guys about anything. I do wish you the best and your time may be more productive in this than mine ever was.

I have no problem, I could use a few serfs, it is just that they want to take the rest of us with them into bondage.

I guess in fairness and in moving the marker of good taste, we can now discriminate on the basis of belief or reason in public, the Christian lady said so. I never figured out her father's popularity, the Republican politicians he convorted with never would be thought of as overly moral such as Richard Nixon.

These people appear because corporate media has decided that the USA is to have a superstitious working class with obedience to a guilt tripping diety and belief that kissing the bottoms of the very wealthy is an economic philosophy. Many believe that in making the wealthy like them, they will grow wealthy and the diety will give the class climbing magically educated children who will live in a world where either Jesus or for some strange reason science will solve things. This lady seems to want to return to a lost vision when a nice woman had a reliable woman to come in and clean the windows.

Religion not only helps keep the working people working, it justifies inheriting power and privilage out of proportion to a democratic government. I like to make money, it is just an out of control system. As Ms. Maddow pointed out I think, we are a democracy where any share holder in the world can buy into American politics.

While the religious pundts may have to adjust to Dark Matter not being god, there is still dark energy and other natural phenomena to justify dogmatic belief? Black holes can be angels reporting back to the big guy who lives in the twelth demension on the other side of the event horizon demonstrated by information is never destroyed to is available to be asumpted.

I favor god as an electron that can be anywhere and moves around time, although the theological implications of proability over prophecy would have to be worked out.

Lensing by Galaxies and groups are just god looking through from the heavenly dimension, and we know there are an infinate number of dimensions so one has to hold God and Jesus.

Maybe the rapture is real and Jesus is an invader from the dimension where he does have magical powers.

Wonderful article and back to the here and now dimension.

This has to be one of the worse defense of women. Yes there is real and horrible discrimination against women. The real problem is women themselves if you want to divide the voters into meaningless groupings. As Hillary Rosen was damned for pointing out the truth, Mrs. Romney has very little in common with the woman who provides the kid home health care. So the classification of women as a voting block seems like feel good politics or getting voters to join a team.

Want to change conservative poltics on women's health, get women to stop supporting right wing religion and candidates.

The problem with a defense like this is only men who already support women's health would read it or understand, the god driven will not read it nor get it.

I am reminded of the Punic War as the Romans are closing in on Carthage and the Carthagian Senate debates supporting Hanibal with troops and money or that substituting disabled kids for rich people's kids to sacrifice is the reason they are loosing. Sending half the troops and killing half the kids does not seem the answer.

The speaker also forgot that the Reagan administration killed the fairness doctrine and allowed one company to dominate a media market which tends to alter any debate in a democracy where people don't know each other.

Who says they are virgins, there seems lots of publicity about the money they are putting out in abuse settlements and the out of wedlock children that pop up, something is going on. Chaucer, The Dcameron, Voltaire, and many stories of Western civiliztion center on the sexual adventures of church people.

As many have pointed out, their obsession with gay sex is beyond belief and they need to learn about safe sex and practice it. Praying after sex is not protection, safe sinning, or polite abusing. If anyone needs free and readily available good sex education and birth control like condoms it is the holy.

Given the Roman Church puts the church/corporation above it's beliefs, it would be in their best interest to cut the scandals of Cardinal-Parents and HIV infected priests and nuns.

Can we now get back to the cost benefits of killing young gay people and harvesting organs by pork eating interest charging fundimentalists from around the World.

Living using a wheelchair and raising a kid with significant disabilities, inspiration is the last thing I needed, I had my fill of being inspirational and listening to a bunch of silly proverbs and people being inspirational, it is a waste of time. I would propose it does not even work long term unless you are happy with yourself. If your happy with yourself you don't need an inspirational "cigarette" to get you over a bad spell.

People with disabilities are discriminated against in employment, housing, and education with programs for working age people that keep them very poor all their lives, to compensate for this, the disability service establishment, a few parental authors, and silly people who have bought into being inspired make nice living inspireing us, most of us would rather have dignity and opportunites that being spoon fed this crap.

My friend ask for opportunities, ask for a great critically thinking education, ask for the money spent on inspirational programs, but don't ask for inspiration, it is a excuse to make loosing your self respect seem like a good idea.

I don't view teachers like Dr. Dawkins inspirational, but a person who gives tools to be happy with your self.

Pangloss made answer in these terms: "O my dear Candide, you must remember Pacquette, that pretty wench, who waited on our noble Baroness; in her arms I tasted the pleasures of Paradise, which produced these Hell torments with which you see me devoured. She was infected with an ailment, and perhaps has since died of it; she received this present of a learned Franciscan, who derived it from the fountainhead; he was indebted for it to an old countess, who had it of a captain of horse, who had it of a marchioness, who had it of a page, the page had it of a Jesuit, who, during his novitiate, had it in a direct line from one of the fellow adventurers of Christopher Columbus; for my part I shall give it to nobody, I am a dying man."

"O sage Pangloss," cried Candide, "what a strange genealogy is this!

Why is this popular with some parents,

  1. Many parents want an answer, and because there is none make up one.
  2. Many parents get into being maryters or professional spokespersons for their kids and recieve lots of attention for there suffering, better to be a big fish in a small pond than just a fish.
  3. Medial science has failed their child and they don't trust medical science or a corrupt government telling them what to do. One big reason parents say is that the drug companies are behind the vaccines and want to cash in on people's misery. Given the scandals of drugging kids, especially kids with significant autisum they are worried. Often with different kinds of developmental disabilities there are mental health issues, and again the druging instead of therapy or without therapy is too common a practice, especially in families without means.
  4. Handicappisum
  5. Segregation of people with disabilities and in the US, an out of control institutional and board & care industry.
  6. A right wing libertarian ideology. Many of these folks are religious, most don't push it though.

On my face book page I have run into a bunch of anti vaccine parents, I have a long history in Independent Living/community living, I posted this today, only got one parent to reply and he said there were no studies.
Autism and Vaccines

For the last few months on Facebook I have been reading about how vaccines have cause autism and that parents should not have their children vaccinated. I have also read several blogs by scientist saying vaccines are safe. I don’t have autism nor do any of my family so my experience is with parents at disability rights events and meeting some of their kids. When I worked in the Developmental Disability field, Down Syndrome was the fashionable disability by virtue of some very strong, connected, and mostly wonderful parents. They were a major force in the Parents Movement of the 70’s which founded community living services for all people with developmental disabilities.

I am getting that autism like Muscular Dystrophy, MS, or Arthritis is a set of symptoms, not a diagnosis with a single cause. If I am wrong please let me know.

If some types of Autism are genetic then vaccinating after birth could not cause it, The question becomes, can people develop autistic symptoms as children as a child could acquire paralysis from a spinal cord injury?

I have read that breathing auto pollution can be a cause in pregnant women, and I can’t find the article, but the author plotted births in relation to freeways, giving the example of the high incidents in Beverly Hills and the freeways close by. Besides vaccines and genetics are there any studies that show different causes?

I can’t say I have been very impressed with the anti vaccine evidence and if I had young children would have them vaccinated, but there is always the Fred Hoyle experience. Great claims take great evidence, not a few articles. Dr. Hoyle hypothesized over fifty years ago that protein molecules came to earth when the earth was bombarded by comets and meteors, he was laugh at but now is being taken seriously as new evidence comes in. Besides what I and most of the medical research community consider bad science by Dr. Wakefield, is there any independent clinical trials and peer review that does not use this man’s work?

I was in a facebook discussion on the church that refused to let a mixed race couple attend services, and being weak believers, a few hundred emails and like Mormons of Salt Lake City had a new revelation.

I wrote something about we are all Africans and that about 150,000 years ago our ancestors came out of Africa. Science had shown that we are all really cousins no matter what our skin color by our genetics. One person insisted I was a racist. His beef was evolution, not racisum but he could not say it. I just don't think logic can overcome belief. The Vaticans chief exorsist which is a featured article on the home page of this site, insists it is satan, not the character and recruitment of priests which is at fault in the Roman Catholic sex scandals, logic has no place in his mind. Argue with logic all we want, but it is feeling and cultural norms that matter most.

My mother, came home from teaching 40 years ago flustered, a student had told her she did not need to know how to read because she was saved. Logic works well on non believers but the faithful will always find someone else to blame.

ORAC presents some very good arguments, I would not post them to my professional facebook page because they are confrontational which is great when dealing with the anti vaccine leadership but not for parents investigating these claims for the first time, at least as an introduction, a kinder and gentler approach would be wonderful. I do post things from this website and other critical thinking sites, ORAC has convinced me that the best evidence is that get your kid vaccinated.
