Wow, does this bring up memories. I had almost the exact same experience except some engineers at Convair made a little telescope for me. I didn't become a scientist, though, I should have. Living in Texas, I incessantly hear the pervasive anti-science/scientist attitude. I remember being a little kid in the 1950's, though. Scientists and science were held in high esteem, Mr. Wizard and Julius Sumner Miller were on TV, teachers promoted science even if they didn't know it that well. Something happened to all that, it seems. There are many good science shows on TV now, but they're mixed up with pseudo-science, religion, searching for bigfoot and ancient aliens and no distinction is made among them. When I go to the science section at book stores, they have pseudo science and religious books mixed up with them. It's warped and enraging. Graxan, A+ on your comment!

Let's see, Ronnie Raygun was in office in 1982. This was the start of "ignorance is not only bliss, but admirable" and "you don't need an education, we'll teach you what you need to know". I'm not surprised that the statistics are essentially unchanged.

Actually, I'm not sure it makes any difference. I think I've seen my girlfriend's two teenagers crack a textbook maybe half a dozen times in their entire combined 8 high school years. They typically throw them in the floor at the first of the school year, then pick them up from the floor at the end of the school year when they have to turn them in.

Go to: Sharia Law: neither equal nor free

Border Collie's Avatar Jump to comment 24 by Border Collie

The issue is that sharia IS NOT law unless it's allowed to take hold and propagate. Don't let it begin. At least, some of the red neck legislatures and governors here in the states have started passing and signing "no foreign law" bills. Of course, the stupid dhimmi feds are suing them, but so what? If enough states do it, the feds won't be able to stand up to it. I'm sure you Brits have a number of anti-sharia organizations in your country. Sharia has no place in Western Civilization, period. That should be perfectly clear except to the most delusional. And, this is not just a right-wing issue, even though many of the anti-sharia websites have a definite right wing slant. Sharia will put righties and lefties out of business equally. If you consider yourself a liberal atheist and think that you can somehow live with sharia, I have bad news for you. No matter how liberal and or atheist you believe yourself to be, nor how distasteful it might seem, we must join hands and sing kum ba yah with the conservative believers on this issue. No sharia in Western Civilization ...

Go to: Ultra-Orthodox Jews Rally to Discuss Risks of Internet

Border Collie's Avatar Jump to comment 20 by Border Collie

Metamag ... Where did I get that impression? Oh, I don't know. By observation over my entire life maybe. Disparity in Nobel prizes count between Jews and Muslims, perhaps. I am aware that the ultras are pretty crazy and that, on the surface, they don't appear that different from the Islamic crazies and, in reality, they're probably not. I argue with them all the time on other sites about circumcision of boys, telling them that it's just as ignorant as FGM. They don't like that very much. I don't care. But, you know, in general, I hardly ever think about being blown to bits by Jews and I'm not sure I've ever heard of rabid orthodox Jews flying jetliners into buildings, blowing up buses in the UK or trains in Spain. I get your point, but I think I'll continue to expect stupidity and barbarism from Muslims, but expect a higher level of functioning from Jews, realistic or not. And, I'm not so sure that the only difference between ultras and the Taliban are that minor. I'm incapable of that level of multicultural equivocation, though. Well, maybe ideologically they're not that dissimilar, in a sense, but in behavior, they're vastly different. BTW, I read almost all of Jerry's articles and the accompanying comments every day. I even make a comment once in a while.
