Comment 6 by Helga Vierich :

A 24 year old without Facebook or Twitter, for instance, is almost inconceivable.

My mate from Uni (also 24 years old), doesn't have a facebook account or any other social media. Most the blokes I know do have facebook (I'd say, 90%), but use it only about once a month, sometimes not even touching it for months on end (as in, their profiles have no activity even though they have upwards of 100 'friends'), and in their case, it has just become a static contact list (like an old telephone numbers book of your friends).

Most people on this website support freedom of expression - even when it hurts the feelings of Muslims - so guys, what are we going to do about this?

I regularly see pictures of Jesus in my local newspaper but never prophet Mo? Are people really that scared of their throat being slashed?

I can't get over people like this. I would never dream of embarrassing myself publicly like them. I can't even imagine myself storming into a book launching event and screaming at the author and people calmly standing around. I don't know where they get off on doing this stuff....

Growing a big wild looking beard, yelling like cavemen, and getting into some quasi-tribal mob roaming around attempting to intimate people out of saying things they disagree with. Truly astounding it's the year 2011. I doubt even our ancient ancestors 100,000s of years ago would act so lowly.

Good luck to him.

I hope he has some kind of strong input into physics. I'm sure many geniuses simply learn what there is to know in physics, but never add to the field in any meaningful way. I hope to hear from this kid again in the future.

I know my personal memory is better than average; but I still consider human memory to be so bad: especially when compared to the near perfect memory of computers.

The human brain (I think) actively spits out anything it doesn't consider necessary for survival, like the colour of the pen-lid on the pen that was in the can at the hospital's secretary's desk. But you can strongly remember that moment you almost died.

What I can't seem to get over is the fusion of primitive superstition-induced barbarism, with modern technological devices. They have some kind of witch-hunt, then when people see someone getting brutally executed, they circle that individual, then they all whip out their internet-connected IPhones and film the entire thing, before uploading it to various servers for others to download.

This is seriously messed-up!

Go to: Top Ten Myths About the Brain

-TheCodeCrack-'s Avatar Jump to comment 20 by -TheCodeCrack-

I disagree with one point on the list, and that one is that the human brain is not like a computer.

There are some strong parallels between a brain and a computer. A brain is made of neurons, that connect to other neurons due to changing synapses connections. A computer has bits/bytes, which can be logically linked to other bits/bytes.

No, a byte is not a neuron, and no, the way in which there is logical connection between different bytes in memory is not equal to synapses connections, but the high-level concept seems very similar to me.
