Your conclusions seems to me to be correct: humanity is fucked. It was fucked when it imprisoned Galileo and when it lynched Hypatia and when it sentenced Socrates to death. Maybe it's best to try to keep an enclave of non-horribleness around oneself if possible and, otherwise, to flee to someplace where it is possible.

Stephen Fry, he's very thoughtful. Whilst I don't like the idea of preachers manipulating the public I think Stephen Fry would do it well. Here's a vid: http://youtu.be/8HiaePLocUw. The whole speech is superb.

Lapithes's Avatar Jump to comment 5 by Lapithes

I don't see a solution to your (our, all of ours) problem, Kohadril, but before you decide to bottle up your anger there are two points I'd like to make:

  1. Denying one's feelings doesn't work, as you know, never mind how fearful you are of becoming curmudgeonly.

  2. There is always a risk of judging someone––a religious person, say––unfairly but it is not better never to judge at all; a suspension of justice is injustice, there is virtue in deterring harm of others as well as in not doing harm yourself.

You can do more good not by being more judgmental but by being a better judge: put your anger in hunting facts and try to gain the perspective that uncovers tabloid hype and apathetic complaisance.

Comment 67 by TeraBrat :

One more thing. No one has been "displaced" by Jews in Israel. The "Palestians who left did it because their Imams told them to leave. Not a single "settlement" has been built on "stolen" land. The land is bought and paid for in advance. The reason they say it's stolen si because they would be murdered by their own people if they admitted they sold the land to a Jew.

A very interesting and enjoyable video, really an admirable piece of work. I do hope the Professor's interviewees are briefed on the youtube people, compared to people here they can be staggeringly rude.

As far as communities go, and on the subject of traditions too, I can sympathize with her statements. I love my pagan, Christian, pagan-Christian and local traditions too (well, most) as well as the groups of people I hang out with, support and can count on, one just must retain the independence and critical mode of thought to steer clear of objectionable things.

The hospital probably hasn't much choice in this. And we (i.e. non-Victorians) can't force other people not to care about nudity. What we can do is harass hospital staff by making a giant scene over something very particular and ridiculous, for instance over the fact that people don't do the Macarena each time before sitting down somewhere, thereby devaluing the complaints of other silly people and straining the hospital to the point that they announce they will not be making people comply with absurd requests any longer. But that'd be an ambitious project.
