Go to: A Bitter Rift Divides Atheists

gerard52's Avatar Jump to comment 113 by gerard52

This talk of a new atheism vs. make-nice atheism is something, i think, that needlessly diverts us from ending the bigotry we all face. When religion allied with the state was able to create laws against nonbelievers it did not matter if the particular faith tradition was conservative, moderate or liberal the infidel faced persecution all the same. We need to use all the intellectual tools available to us in combating religions relentless assault against the integrity of freethinking, rational, science supporting and ethical nonbelievers.

I was reading online this morning about a schocking news story out of North Carolina where a four year old child and his mother were murdered by a religious cult leader because they both were suspected of being gay, religion not only poisons everyting but it kills too. I can imagine the hateful comments Mr. Dewitt received from his former friends and neighbors for expressing his change of conscious and admire his courage to procliam his rational thinking in a town so dominated by religious superstition and fanaticism, I wish him good luck in his new mission in life.

The assault on science education in Louisiana is an example of the dismal educational conditions prevailing in that region of the U.S. the fundies control the state houses and the governors offices, insuring that this may continue for years to come and the children and the nation will suffer for it.

This article is just more theist codswallop, their desire to paint atheist as totalitarians is just plan wrong, religion and god worship is inherently dictatorial and antidemocratic because one has to submit to an invisible omniscient being for which their is no evidence for, take it on faith alone. The campaign to maintain the separation of church and state is gaining traction; thanks Sean.

I watched the discussion and 'Mr. Definitely' was clearly out of his league, if it is as was suggested that ones celerity trumps clear and careful reasoning and informed utterances, Mos needs to be better prepared to express his ideas a lot clearer in the future. The Hitch was his usual transpicuous self and very funny too. Finally, Salman's tribute to his comrade and friend was a very sincere and heartfelt statement to a much loved friend. Bravo.

Very sad, I never met the man but I feel that I had always known him, I saw him at a program at Howard University featuring Richard and Neil DeGrasse Tyson, to be in an auditorium with the three of these giants of the Gnu atheist movement was very inspiring.

Sean, I share your concern and fears for the direction of our country and appreciate your efforts and that of the RDFRS in trying to maintain the secular principles this nation was founded on. The GOP has been taken over by the theoconservatives who seek to impose their idea of what kind of governing system we should have in this nation, too me, this is unacceptable. I fully support the endeavors to maintain our secular constitution and nation.

Here is a definition of Libertarianism that nails it for me:" A simple-minded right-wing ideology ideally suited to those unable or unwilling to see past their own sociopathic self-regard.' I am not sure who wrote this but Shermer and Jillette wear it seamlessly. We atheist are certainly a diverse group.
