Having just read the biography of Vladimir Putin 'The man without a Face',by Masha Gessen, which I heartily recommend, I believe the increase in christian Church attendance in Russia actually suits Putin's agenda.Whilst he is instituting huge fines for anyone caught protesting he is openly welcoming clergy to the Kremlin and being publically shown doing so.It is merely another control tool he has added to his arsenal. Also by allowing christianity to emerge from underground it shows him as a strong leader, unafraid of other threatening dogma, and adds christians to his dwindling list of supporters.

Surely this is the time to disestablish this ridiculous organisation of petulant old men in dresses.Let them become a private organisation that can do what they will behind their own closed doors.Suggest this to them ,together with taxation and see how quickly they pipe is, and has always been about power and money.Threaten to take either away and we will soon see how serious they are.

Nicely done Richard and if you look at the comments fillowing the article you can see that the hornet's nest is suitably stirred. Is it not still amazing that so much bile can be generated just by an outsider asking exactly what it is necessary to believe, to render one a catlick? As I understand the vatican's edicts, they will decide the dogma one must believe to be a catlick. If one does not believe the dogma,by the vatican's tenets one ain't a catlick!

Good post above from strangebrew. Can there be anyone less qualified to comment on sexual or marital affairs than a catlick priest or nun? What advice can they offer and upon what pretext? certainly not experience! Well perhaps in advanced masturbatory techniques, but not in marital problems. This is historic as part of their intention to be involved and in control of every aspectand detail of their sheeples' lives!

Comment 10 by Richard Dawkins

The Vatican is here simply upholding the vile doctrines that their church has always stood for. This was the church, and these were the vile doctrines, that Sister Farlwy bought into when she became a nun. If she disapproves of them, why did she become a nun in the first place? Why doesn't she get out now? Perhaps she has decided she can do the church more damage, and hasten its total destruction more effectively, by attacking from within rather than from outside? In that case I wish her well.

Wednesday, 06 June 2012 at 10:10 AM | #945826

We would all wish her well Richard if that were the case.I suspect she is one of many in this vile organisation that hold these views, but she is one of the very very few with the courage to express them.As always this will just blow over and it will be business as usual from tomorrow.

The presence of bishops is no more than an irritation for we rational people. Who cares if they are opposed to gay marriage? What's the big deal about marriage? It's only a convention it doesn't stop two people having a fucking relationship. And as for faith schools, well of course the organisation's officials will back them, but given that the actual education in virtually all schools is non-existent, their support just keeps the window to ludicrous religion led behaviour wide open for all to see and and gawp at. Religion is not going to disappear because of rational arguments it will be laughed away over decades. The moment a bishop opens his mouth (forgive the gender pronoun, there are no she-bishops) the argument against organised religion is enhanced. No one listens to them spouting their nonsense from the pulpit and no one credits it from the red leather upholstered benches of the Lords either. In short I repeat, they like the monarchy are irrelevant.

Philoctetes I think you are being naive if you think the bishops in the lords are no more than an irritation. They ,together with some tory MPs and all tory lords, will fight tooth and nail to prevent the wholesale reform of the lords to bring in a wholly elected house. The majority of the lords are xtian(official figures not mine) and the presence of a cabal of bishops to curry favour and control opinion is more than an irritation.Education minister Michael Gove has passed proposals to open more faith schools at taxpayers expense and has made it easy for present academies to become faith schools. Not surprisingly Gove is also an xtian.I feel that the official presence of these clerics is anything but just an irritation. The church of England is still the country's biggest landowner and wields far more 'behind the scenes' power than any MP is still willing to admit.

No need for any fuss, both the monarchy and the CofE are largely irrelevant. The Bishops have little input in the House of Lords and most of them are probably atheists anyway. Both institutions are more symbolic than active and it is arguable that their presence actually protects us from the more dangerous and interventionist ravings of the evangelicals of X'tianity and other faiths.

You mean similar to the way the presence of 'moderate muslims' protects us from the nutters that fly planes into buildings? If you believe the bishops are more symbolic than active you need to check on their active opposition to gay marriage and their active involvement in the increase of funds to faith schools.

As far as I am concerned she can be head of any organisation she wishes, whether actively or in an honourable role. She can be Grand Poobah of the Honourable company of biscuit menders if she wants. What is at issue here is the continuance of the ridiculous situation of a proscribed belief system for the country.Which incidentally was only set up by Henry VIII, so that he could divorce Catherine of Aragon to marry Anne Boleyn. It was a purely political act based upon Henry's sexual appetite and wanting to tell the then Pope where to go.Why,some 450 years later we are still tolerating this nonsense is simply beyond me.The point raised by 'Mary's Vibrator' in comment 1 is actually a bit too close for comfort to what the Tories are considering:that is the inclusion of other clerics, such as the chief Imam and the chief Rabbi in the Lords to add to the already existing 26 anglican bishops!

"In a case late last year that did not get to the police, a 30-year-old molested a 14-year-old boy in a Jewish ritual bath in Brooklyn, and a rabbi “made the boy apologize to the molester for seducing him,” he said."

Does anyone else find this as mindboggling as I do ?

Vortex, I do not find this mind boggling at all.If you consider the other batshit crazy practices these people carry out on a daily basis: Circumcision. sex with the wife only through a hole in a sheet. the Rabbi inspecting a womens underwear to see if her menstrual cycle has finished and she is now 'pure' again so may sleep in the same room as her husband. little girls aged 3 years old and upwards having to cover their arms heads and legs so not to inflame male desire. wives can only look their husbands in the eye but no other man as it might inflame his desires. women must cover their heads with a wig up to any age as the sight of their hair may inflame a man's desires. the end of general education at 14, with only study of ancient texts allowed after that date. no formal qualifications allowed in any profession. can't switch the light on on Saturdays. no contraception. 613 rules for your everyday existence. medieval fancy dress at all times. There will be more I'm sure, even the secular Israelis are getting pissed off with these people in their own country and are about to remove their ability to dodge work, taxes and military service. If you look at the list of prohibitions and the sort of society and opinions it has spawned you can see just how close to Muslims their phobias are.
