Since his death I have referred to Hitch as our modern Voltaire....I miss that increadible combination of his mind, voice, tenacity and humour. As Richard so perfectly opened with, "We've lost our most powerful rhetorical artillary piece.....". How could it be said better? I for one am so very happy to have him to learn from.....

Comment 15 by Stafford et all: Back to a more serious note if we please. One of the best background articles on Pakistan I have read was by Christopher Hitchens called "From Abbottabad to Worse". Hitch postumously received the 2012 National Magazine Award for this essay and two others he publishes in Vanity Fair in 2011 while he was so gravely ill. It is classic Hitch....amd really makes one wonder...what the hell are we thinking when addressing questions regarding Pakistan.

Israel's new Cutting Edge Airport Security

TEL AVIV, Israel. The Israelis are developing an airport security device that eliminates the privacy concerns that come with full-body scanners. It's an armored booth you step into that will not X-ray you, but will detonate any explosive device you may have on your person.

Israel sees this as a win-win situation for everyone, with none of this crap about racial profiling. It will also eliminate the costs of long and expensive trials.

You're in the airport terminal and you hear a muffled explosion. Shortly thereafter, an announcement: Attention to all standby passengers, El Al is proud to announce a standby seat available on flight 670 to London . Shalom!

Naturalist1's Avatar Jump to comment 41 by Naturalist1

I don't know about Great Britain, but here in Canada medical school programs are EXTREMELY difficult to get into, even for students with very high GPAs. The testing, screening and interview process is exhaustive. In short, they are looking for the right kind of individual. I know this because a good friend of mine is a doctor who sits on the admissions board for one of our university medical schools. The solution to this is simple. Determine what their attitudes are regarding evolutionary science is BEFORE they are admitted. Make it one of the criteria for admission. This does not constitute a dsiscrimination based on religious freedom. It is simply a way of determining suitability to this most rigorous profession.

Absolutely LOVE this wonderful video and myself express undying gratitude to Hitch for all he has given us. He has helped so many people learn to think and articulate their thoughts without fear. Still....there is something bothering me about the recent string of posts on this site all in homage to Christopher....is there something going on we are not being told? Something the RDF site has been notified of by Hitch's family? Has his health deteriorated seriously to a point where his end is near? I hope not. How does one ask this question delicately with compassion? I wish him well...I wish him happiness.

Go to: 'A Universe From Nothing' by Lawrence Krauss, AAI 2009

Naturalist1's Avatar Jump to comment 61 by Naturalist1

All this rather pedantic ramble about what Dr. Krauss means by "Nothing". I attended this same lecture given by Lawrence Krauss at the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics in Oct. 2008. Anybody who was in that room knew exactly what he mean't by the word "Nothing" and it is explained in this video very clearly in this video starting at 19:40 and made abundantly clear as he explains the animation at 20:50 (no particles, no radiation...the space remains) of virtual fields/particles spontaneously popping in and out of existence. He goes on to say that these events happening in a region where there is "Nothing"(between the quarks) account for 90% of the mass of the proton. To all those arguing that "Something cannot come from nothing", he further, at the Perimeter lecture, argued that the state of "Nothing" is intrinsically unstable and it is inevitable that quantum fluctuations occur that cause matter/energy fields to spontaneously pop into-out of existence. His words...not mine. Do we understand it all....NO. Are we getting closer....YES!....the LHC will hopefully shed light on this...provide some interesting surprizes too.
